Rivermaya vocalist Rico Blanco mourns the loss of his younger brother, Rey “King” Blanco, who passed away at the age of 50 on May 14, 2025.
The family confirmed King’s death through a Facebook post by his daughter Daniela on May 15.

More than a week later, on Wednesday, May 21, Rico shared throwback photos on Instagram showing the close bond he shared with King from childhood to adulthood.
In his post’s caption, Rico expressed deep gratitude to everyone who offered their prayers and support during King’s difficult health journey.
“Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. You gave my dearest brother so much strength. You made him feel he wasn’t alone in a battle he fought till the very end,” he wrote.

Rico also extended a heartfelt farewell to King, thanking him for the love and joy he brought to their family:
“Farewell, King. Thank you for bringing us so much love and so much joy. Kuya loves you so much.”
The family has not disclosed the cause of King’s death. However, Rico had publicly revealed in January 2025 that King was diagnosed with cancer and asked for prayers amid the health struggle.
King was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a form of cancer originating in squamous cells—specialized cells lining the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.
According to the pathology report, the paranasal sinuses, including the maxillary, frontal, sphenoid, and ethmoid sinuses, are air-filled spaces within the bones around the nose that reduce skull weight and produce mucus.
