Phoemela Baranda opens up about her modeling heyday and return to acting

Phoemela’s career began in the world of modeling at just 14 years old. She joined the Pink Soda Club at 13, which paved the way for numerous projects, including commercials locally and internationally.

Phoemela Baranda’s television journey has come full circle with her return to GMA 7, where she first gained recognition as the host of “Extra Challenge” back in 2003. Today, she makes a notable comeback as a Kapuso actress in the intense primetime drama “Slay,” portraying Margarita, the domineering mother of Gabbi Garcia’s character.

Grateful for the new chance, Phoemela shared with me during her guest appearance on "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda," “This time, I hope I can prove myself as an actress.”

Having worked alongside her extensively on “The Buzz,” it was a pleasure to reconnect after a decade. Seeing her flourishing in both her career and personal life brings genuine happiness.

Phoemela’s career began in the world of modeling at just 14 years old. She joined the Pink Soda Club at 13, which paved the way for numerous projects, including commercials locally and internationally.

Reflecting on those formative years, she remarked, “I was really lucky because I was regional. Meaning, a commercial they would pay me for the whole region to be aired in the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore. So, we saved a lot there.”

As modeling careers often have a limited span, the television screen became a viable alternative. Approaching 25, Phoemela auditioned to host “Extra Challenge” following Miriam Quiambao’s departure. This marked the beginning of her steady presence on various TV shows, including popular showbiz talk programs aired on Sundays.

“Working with you guys taught me how to be strong, how to be on my toes. Being in showbiz, it’s really different,” she recalled, referring to her experiences with me and Kris Aquino.

Phoemela also reminisced about the advice I offered her over the years. “Sometimes, mostly, I didn’t listen because I was stubborn. I was in my 20s. If I really went back, I would have really listened to all your advice,” she admitted.

On the personal front, Phoemela’s eldest daughter Kim is now 26 years old. Phoemela previously disclosed that she became a mother at 19 and that her family initially introduced Kim as her niece, later presenting her as a younger sister - a decision her mother made.

“At that time, because as a model there are really many morality clauses. There are many contracts that are going to be lost. I have contracts for these products - shampoo, soap. They’re all very strict about the morality clause. So, when they said I have a child out of wedlock, there was a clause that I really would be lost. That time I had to do it for my family so we wouldn’t lose income,” she explained.

The bond between mother and daughter remains strong. Phoemela sees much of herself in Kim but joked, “Mas mabait na version ko si Kim.”

Phoemela has been in a long-term relationship with Jason Choachuy, with whom she shares a daughter. Although they are not married yet, Phoemela expressed, “Working on our relationship more.” She believes that marriage should not be rushed merely for the sake of a child.

“Marriage. Not for the sake of not dreaming, but I am happy now. My heart is happy. My family is happy. I’m in a very good place,” she said.

I always wish Phoemela happiness and continued success in both her personal and professional life.
