An unusual abdominal sign warns of severe fa:tty l!ver: If you see it, get checked immediately.

A gastroenterologist has suggested how to recognize fatty liver disease from an unusual sign in the abdomen.

Abdominal Pain May Be a Warning Sign of Advanced Fatty Liver Disease
Stomach pain is a common symptom linked to many gastrointestinal disorders. However, it can also be an indicator of advanced-stage fatty liver disease, a condition that shouldn't be overlooked.
To help distinguish abdominal pain related to severe fatty liver from typical digestive issues, Dr. Amol Dahale, a specialist in Internal Gastroenterology at Manipal Hospital (India), explains:

“One of the most common signs of fatty liver disease is a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, or dull pain in the abdomen. Patients often report persistent, mild to moderate pain in the upper right portion of the belly. This discomfort may also be accompanied by bloating or a sensation of fullness.”

Dr. Dahale adds that this pain can range in intensity and tends to worsen after consuming greasy or high-fat meals.

“If you experience this kind of pain, it’s important to consult a doctor promptly for a thorough evaluation and accurate diagnosis,” he emphasized.

Don’t Underestimate Fatty Liver Disease
According to Medical News Today, fatty liver disease occurs when there is excessive fat accumulation in the liver. It is classified into two types: alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
In its early stages, the disease often goes unnoticed because it usually doesn't produce clear symptoms. Most individuals discover they have fatty liver by chance — during routine health checkups or screenings for work or study abroad.
If left undiagnosed or untreated, both types of fatty liver disease can lead to serious complications, including inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and eventually even liver cancer.
Studies in developed countries have consistently shown that fatty liver is now a leading cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer, overtaking other known factors.

Stages of Fatty Liver and Its Reversibility
Fatty liver disease progresses through multiple phases — from mild to severe. The ability of the liver to heal depends on how advanced the damage is. Fortunately, this condition is largely preventable and, in many cases, reversible through lifestyle changes.
How to Reduce the Risk of Fatty Liver Disease:
  • Maintain a healthy weight and monitor your diet carefully.

  • Reduce intake of refined sugars; instead, eat more fiber, healthy fats (like those in olive oil, fish, nuts), and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

  • Limit alcohol consumption or avoid it altogether.

  • Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine.

  • Manage metabolic conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension.

  • Get regular health screenings — liver ultrasounds and blood tests can help detect fatty liver early.

Final Note
Though often silent in the beginning, fatty liver disease can have severe consequences if ignored. Being proactive with lifestyle choices and seeking timely medical attention can significantly reduce your risk. Early detection, combined with smart health habits, remains your best defense. a
