Hours before his controversial outburst at the wedding of his daughter Claudia Barretto and Basti Lorenzo, Dennis Padilla, the actor and politician, had shared that he intended to gift Claudia and Basti some special items, including a personalized "astig" cap and two jars of bagoong (fermented fish or shrimp paste). Padilla excitedly revealed the gifts in a now-deleted Facebook Live video, where he showed the “astig” cap, complete with his face printed on it, encased in a plastic box, and the two different types of bagoong—sweet and spicy—prepared as part of his gift.

In the video, he spoke of the preparations for the wedding, showing the simple, heartfelt gifts he had planned for the couple. He also mentioned that he had bought his barong (a traditional Filipino shirt) from Pandi, Bulacan, and paired it with an undershirt and pants from a popular brand, along with black leather shoes that he had bought in 2016 but polished for the occasion.

As the video continued, Padilla spoke warmly about his daughter Claudia and her marriage to Basti. He shared his joy, saying that he was thrilled that Claudia had found a life partner and hoped that they would bless him with a grandchild before he dies, as he had not yet experienced being a grandfather at his age. “I’m very happy na nakakita na si Claudia ng life partner… To Claudia and Basti, I’m so very happy for you and I know that God will bless your wedding. God will bless the both of you. Sana magkaroon ako ng apo sa inyo kasi wala pa akong apo sa edad ko. Sana mabigyan niyo ko ng apo bago pumanaw man lang,” Padilla expressed.

(To Claudia and Basti, I’m so very happy for you. I know that God will bless your wedding. God will bless both of you. I hope that I can have a grandchild from both of you because I don’t have one at this age. I hope that you can give me a grandchild before I die.)

Padilla’s remarks also conveyed his desire to repair his relationship with his children, especially Claudia, with whom he admitted to having many shortcomings. He expressed surprise and happiness at being invited to the wedding, as he had already mentally prepared himself for the possibility of not being invited, considering the lack of frequent communication due to past disagreements with his ex-wife, Marjorie Barretto.

He said, “Masaya na malungkot sa anak kong ito, kasi marami rin talaga akong pagkukulang sa kanila, lalo na dito kay Claui… Natuwa naman ako na nainvited ako sa kanilang wedding. I never expected it kase I already prepared myself na kung magkakaroon ng ganitong occasion, di ko naman sila nakakausap o nakikita madalas. Syempre nagkaron din kami ng mga tampuhan, so it was a big surprise for me to get invited.”

(It’s a happy and sad feeling that my daughter is getting married, because I really have a lot of shortcomings, especially to Claui. I am happy to get invited because I wasn’t expecting it. I already prepared myself to the possibility of not getting invited to such occasions since we were no longer on speaking terms or see each other often because of our disagreements. So it was a big surprise for me to get invited.)

Padilla went on to express his hope for continued communication with his children, especially Claudia, and his desire to make up for his past mistakes. “Sana magkaron pa rin tayo ng communication even after the wedding kase, Claui, gusto ko rin sana makabawi sayo. Andami kong pagkukulang sayo. I love you,” he said.

(I hope that we could maintain our communication even after the wedding because, Claudi, I want to make up for my shortcomings. I really messed up. I love you.)

However, his attendance at the wedding later became a subject of controversy. Padilla took to social media to express his frustration over being treated as a mere “visitor of the bride” instead of having the role of the “father of the bride,” a traditional honor. This outburst drew public attention and led to a defensive response from Marjorie Barretto, Claudia’s mother. In a recent two-part interview, Marjorie explained that Dennis had actually agreed to let Claudia walk down the aisle alone, and she pointed out that the wedding was meant to be a private and intimate moment for Claudia and Basti. Unfortunately, Padilla’s comments turned the event into a “telenovela,” she stated.

After the public backlash, both Dennis and his brother, Gene Padilla, decided to turn off the comment section of their Instagram accounts, likely in response to the ongoing criticism they faced.
