Buboy Villar, the well-loved Kapuso comedian and TV host, recalls his childhood memory of feeling joy for the first time when he was able to give his mother a simple yet meaningful gift: rice and canned goods. Growing up, he learned the value of family, care, and generosity.
During his early years, Buboy shared that he secretly joined a singing contest while wearing his mother’s shimmering costume, without her knowing. He had always admired his mother, who would often participate in local singing contests, and one day decided to join the contest as well.
In a recent episode of his vodcast “Your Honor” with Tuesday Vargas, Buboy shared how he would always watch his mother participate in these contests. Inspired, he decided to sneak out of the house, bringing one of her costumes with him, to take part in a singing contest. However, when he arrived, he realized the contest was only for adults, and he was the only child contestant.
To his surprise, a judge, likely feeling sorry for him, asked him to sing, and he was awarded rice and canned goods as a prize.
Pinakanta nila ako, binigyan nila ako ng bigas, de lata,” he laughed as he shared the experience.
As fate would have it, a neighbor who witnessed the event reported it to Buboy’s mother. But rather than scolding him, his mother encouraged him to continue pursuing his newfound “career.”
Buboy’s mother motivated him to keep going, and that moment set the foundation for his career in entertainment.
The comedian reflected on that early experience, which led him to develop the talents he has today.
“So, ‘yun, nagtuluy-tuloy. Hindi na nawala hanggang ngayon. Kung hindi nangyari ‘yun, wala akong talentong ganito ngayon,” Buboy said with gratitude.
Pinaka nasa isip ko lang noon, ‘Wow, ito pala ‘yung pakiramdam na makapagbigay sa pamilya,’” Buboy shared, touching upon how the experience made him feel proud to give something back to his family.
