Ogie Diaz reveals no vote for fellow celebs Willie Revillame, Phillip Salvador

He emphasized that while everyone has the right to back the candidates they believe in, they equally hold the right to withhold support.

Ogie Diaz openly admitted that he did not support fellow celebrities Willie Revillame and Phillip Salvador in their recent senate bids, despite sharing the same industry background. Diaz explained that the campaign tactics employed by the two candidates did not resonate with him.

The actor and showbiz insider discussed this candidly during an interview with journalist Christian Esguerra on the “Facts First” political vlog, aired Monday, May 19.

The topic arose when Esguerra asked Diaz about his reaction to the midterm election outcomes.

“I’m happy because Bam [Aquino] and Kiko Pangilinan were among those who won the Senate race despite not being featured in earlier surveys. I really campaigned for them,” Diaz remarked.

Esguerra then inquired whether Diaz, who mentioned voting for Erwin Tulfo, Heidi Mendoza, and Luke Espiritu, also supported Revillame and Salvador.

“I did not vote for them even though we came from the same industry. I’m sorry but I did not like what they were saying and how they campaigned for themselves. They seem to have forgotten that the people are keeping tabs on them,” Diaz stated firmly.

He emphasized that while everyone has the right to back the candidates they believe in, they equally hold the right to withhold support.

Regarding Revillame, Diaz attributed his choice primarily to the latter’s manner of presenting himself as a candidate.

Diaz also acknowledged a “bad history” with Revillame, recalling when the TV host publicly criticized him on air in 2023, accusing Diaz of lacking “utang na loob” (debt of gratitude) after Diaz had allegedly made negative remarks about him.

In the interview, Diaz further criticized Revillame’s past contentious statements, such as claiming there were already too many laws, and how Revillame deflected questions about his political platforms by responding with counter-questions.

Taking a broader view on celebrities entering politics, Diaz advised, “‘Wag nating daanin sa pagpapatawa. Ilabas mo rin ‘yung utak mo, ‘wag puro puso.” (Let us not turn politics into a comedy. Use your brain and not just rely on emotions.)

Meanwhile, Diaz also revealed speaking to Luis Manzano, another celebrity who ran for public office in the recent elections but did not succeed. Diaz encouraged Manzano to continue focusing on show business, where he receives appreciation and applause from the public.
