Undeterred, he took a job that would nonetheless place him close to the machines he loved: working as a fireman and oilman on a railroad, primarily maintaining steam engines. The Invention That Transformed Industry: The Automatic Lubricating Cup

During his time on the railroad, McCoy keenly observed a significant inefficiency. Train engines had to frequently halt their operations for manual lubrication, a time-consuming process that severely hampered transportation speed and overall efficiency.
