In the fields of rural America, life often moves at a slower pace, and moments of unexpected joy can happen when least expected. That was exactly the case one day when a farmer, working in his combine, found himself at the center of a heartwarming story involving a little girl, her family, and a lesson in confidence and inclusion.
It all began when the farmer was unloading grain into an auger cart. As he worked, he noticed a vehicle drive by a few times, eventually pulling over and stopping nearby. At first, he was concerned, but when he caught sight of three curious little faces peering out the window, his worry turned to curiosity.
The woman in the car explained that her grandchildren were visiting from Florida, and they had never seen "farmer stuff" up close. There were two excited boys and a quiet little girl, likely between the ages of 6 and 9. While the boys were full of energy and questions, the little girl remained more reserved, and the farmer noticed that she kept turning away from him.
As the farmer spoke with the family, he realized that the little girl had a birthmark or scar on her face, and he felt bad for even noticing, as he didn’t want to make her uncomfortable. But the kindness and warmth of the family outweighed any awkwardness. After a brief exchange, the grandmother suggested they should leave, understanding that farmers are busy at this time of year. However, one of the boys asked, "Are you going to be going soon? We’d like to see what the machine does."
The grandmother quickly hushed him, but the farmer, wanting to make the experience memorable for the kids, asked if it would be okay to take them for a ride in the combine. The grandmother hesitated but eventually agreed for the boys to join him. The little girl, however, declined the offer.
When the farmer asked her again if she wanted to go, she quietly refused, and so the two boys hopped into the combine for a ride. As they made a loop in the field, the farmer asked the boys why their sister didn’t want to join them. They explained that she was shy. Curious, the farmer asked them about her face, and they revealed that the girl had a birthmark and often got picked on about it.
After the boys had their ride, the farmer walked them back to the car. He turned to the little girl and asked again why she hadn’t joined. She explained, "The boys always say that kind of stuff is just for boys, not for girls."
The farmer, smiling, replied, "You know, there are girl farmers, and I even had a young girl in that cab just yesterday. Would you like a ride?" The little girl hesitated, and then, after a look from her grandmother, she agreed.
The farmer then asked the grandmother if she had a smartphone and knew how to record a video. Laughing, she confirmed, “Of course I do!” The farmer told her to be ready to record as he turned on the yellow flashing lights on the combine.
The little girl climbed into the cab, and the farmer drove her back into the field. As they approached her grandparents’ vehicle, he let her "steer" the combine. The little girl’s eyes widened in surprise at first, but after some encouragement, she took the wheel. "You’re part of the special face club," the farmer said with a wink, explaining that she could drive the combine for a special reason, and it was a secret they couldn’t share.
The joy on her face was undeniable as she drove, and when they returned to her grandparents, she couldn’t wait to tell them. Her smile radiated confidence, and she proudly exclaimed, "Because girls CAN farm!"
The boys, who had been left out of the experience, were clearly a little jealous, but the little girl’s newfound confidence was a moment the farmer would never forget. He was reminded of the countless times he had experienced the joy of driving a tractor with his own grandfather, and he realized how important it was to make others feel that same joy.
As the day ended, the little girl came running back to the farmer, giving him a big hug and thanking him. Her grandfather, moved by the moment, shook the farmer’s hand and said, "I don’t know what you said to her, but that’s the biggest smile we’ve seen on her this vacation." The family drove away, leaving the farmer to reflect on the impact of a small act of kindness.
The farmer, who had been working alone on the field, couldn’t help but think that if one of his combines hadn’t broken down the day before, he might not have been in that field, and this special moment might never have happened. It was a reminder that everything happens for a reason.
The moment stayed with him the rest of the day, especially the image of the little girl’s smile and her bold proclamation: “Because girls CAN farm.” It was a simple but powerful reminder that it’s crucial to make children feel seen, valued, and capable of anything.
