But that would have reduced everything to the very thing Jason had always believed mattered most.

Money.

Instead, she asked a different question.

“Chloe, what did Jason tell you about this car?”

Chloe frowned.

“He told me it was a private investment opportunity.”

“What else?”

“That it would appreciate significantly.”

“And?”

“That he had access to a confidential purchase arrangement.”

Lily nodded.

“Did he provide any written confirmation from the manufacturer?”

Chloe looked at Jason.

He avoided her eyes.

“Jason?”

“It's complicated.”

“That's not what I asked.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I can explain the reservation process.”

Lily turned toward him.

“Please do.”

He hesitated.

“The vehicle was listed as a prospective private acquisition.”

“By whose authority?”

Daniel looked toward the director.

“Management.”

The director's expression hardened.

“I authorized no such transaction.”

Daniel swallowed.

“There must have been a misunderstanding.”

Lily glanced at the screen.

“Then let's examine the record.”

She entered another command.

A transaction history appeared.

The director looked visibly uncomfortable as he recognized several internal authorization codes.

Lily studied the entries.

The preliminary reservation had been created six days earlier.

It had been modified twice.

One modification changed the status from display-only prototype to restricted private allocation.

Another attached a financing inquiry.

The associated username belonged to Daniel.

“Interesting,” Lily said quietly.

Daniel began sweating.

“That doesn't mean anything. It's just internal paperwork.”

“Internal paperwork can create financial obligations,” Lily replied.

“Not necessarily.”

“Then you should have no objection to a review.”

Jason stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous. We're here to buy a car, not participate in some corporate investigation.”

Lily looked at him.

“Then perhaps you should explain how you intended to pay for it.”

Jason's jaw tightened.

“I have substantial assets.”

“Personally owned assets?”

“Yes.”

“Unencumbered?”

He hesitated.

“That's private.”

“Of course it is. And you are entitled to financial privacy.”

For one brief moment, Jason thought she was backing down.

Then Lily continued.

“But this dealership is also entitled to verify that collateral offered in a financing application belongs to the applicant or has been lawfully authorized by its owner.”

Chloe stared at him.

“Jason, why does she keep mentioning collateral?”

He touched her arm.

“Baby, don't let her confuse you.”

Chloe pulled away.

“Answer the question.”

He lowered his voice.

“We discussed using your portfolio as part of a joint investment strategy.”

“No,” Chloe said. “We discussed possible future investments. I never agreed to borrow money against my trust.”

“It was only preliminary.”

“Did you submit my information?”

Jason looked around the showroom.

Too many people were listening.

Too many eyes were fixed on him.

“Can we discuss this privately?”

Chloe's face hardened.

“Did you?”

He did not answer.

Lily stepped toward the director.

“Please have the compliance team secure the original application and provide the authorized trust representatives with the appropriate documentation. The application must remain suspended.”

The director nodded.

“Immediately.”

Chloe looked at Lily.

“You already knew about this?”

“I knew there was an application raising serious questions about authorization. The relevant parties still need to verify the facts.”

Chloe's voice trembled.

“Then he used me.”

Lily did not answer for her.

That conclusion belonged to Chloe.

Jason stepped forward desperately.

“Listen, I was trying to create something for us.”

Chloe stared at him.

“By using my family assets without asking?”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“After everything was finalized.”

Chloe laughed once.

It was a small, broken sound.

“So after I had no real choice?”

Jason opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Across the showroom, Daniel quietly began moving toward the executive corridor.

Lily noticed immediately.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

“Don't leave yet.”

He turned slowly.

“I need to check something.”

“The security team will preserve the relevant records. You can wait here or in the conference room.”

Daniel looked toward the director.

“Sir?”

The director nodded grimly.

“Please cooperate.”

Jason suddenly realized the situation was much larger than an embarrassing encounter with his former girlfriend.

A financial investigation was unfolding around him.

Chloe knew he had lied.

The dealership director was treating Lily as an authority.

And the supposedly exclusive car he had promised to purchase was apparently beyond his reach.

He tried one final tactic.

“Lily,” he said, softening his voice. “Can we talk? Just the two of us?”

She looked at him.

“About what?”

“About everything.”

“There's nothing personal left to discuss.”

“Please.”

Chloe turned away in disgust.

Jason lowered his voice further.

“I know I hurt you.”

Lily remained silent.

“I made mistakes.”

“Yes.”

“But we had something real.”

She studied him for a long moment.

Then she said something that made him look away.

“We had something real when you believed I had nothing. And you decided it wasn't enough.”

He swallowed.

“People change.”

“They do.”

“So maybe we could—”

“No, Jason.”

There was no anger in the answer.

Only certainty.

He stared at her, searching for a sign that the woman who once loved him might still be persuaded.

He found none.

Then Chloe asked a question that changed the direction of the confrontation.

“Lily, who are you?”

The dealership director looked at Lily.

She gave a small nod.

He turned toward the digital wall and opened the manufacturer's ownership record.

The screen displayed Meridian Automotive Holdings, followed by the corporate control information for the Vortex prototype.

Chloe read the first line.

Then the second.

Her eyes widened.

Jason moved closer.

And finally he saw it.

CONTROLLING SHAREHOLDER AND EXECUTIVE CHAIR: LILY.

He read the words twice.

They did not change.

The woman he had abandoned for being ordinary controlled the corporation behind the three-million-dollar vehicle he was desperately trying to purchase.

The realization struck him with such force that he reached for the edge of a nearby desk.

But his humiliation was only beginning.

Because Lily's phone vibrated.

She glanced at the message.

Margaret had sent an urgent update.

We found a second set of records. Daniel's access was used to alter seven previous transactions. One includes a document bearing your father's signature.

Lily felt the blood drain from her face.

Her father had been dead for three years.

She looked toward Daniel.

And for the first time that afternoon, her composure cracked.

“Daniel,” she said, “who gave you access to my father's records?”

The salesman went completely still.

For the first time that afternoon, Lily forgot about Jason.

She forgot about Chloe, the expensive cars, the curious customers, and the humiliating confrontation that had brought the showroom to a standstill.

All she could think about was the message glowing on her phone.

One includes a document bearing your father's signature.

Her father had been dead for three years.

And someone had apparently been using his name.

“Daniel,” Lily repeated, her voice frighteningly calm. “I'm going to ask you one more time. Who gave you access to my father's records?”

Daniel stood beside the reception counter, his hands hanging stiffly at his sides.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

Lily watched him.

“You modified seven transactions using an authorization system you were never supposed to access.”

“That isn't true.”

“Then explain why your employee credentials appear in the transaction history.”

“Someone could have used my account.”

“Who?”

“I don't know!”

His voice rose sharply.

The dealership director stepped forward.

“Daniel, I strongly suggest you cooperate.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“Sir, I've worked here for almost five years. You know me.”

“I know the person you presented yourself to be,” the director replied. “At the moment, I'm trying to determine whether that person actually exists.”

The words landed heavily.

Jason watched the exchange with growing unease.

Until a few minutes earlier, he had believed his greatest problem was that Chloe had discovered his lies.

Now the dealership was discussing forged records and unauthorized transactions.

He suddenly remembered the conversations he had shared with Daniel during the previous week.

Daniel had promised him that anything could be arranged with the right connections.

He had spoken confidently about bypassing restrictions, accessing private inventory, and securing unusual financing terms.

At the time, Jason had interpreted those statements as evidence of exceptional service.

Now they sounded considerably less innocent.

“Lily,” Jason began, “I had nothing to do with any of this.”

She turned toward him.

“I haven't accused you of altering my father's records.”

“I just want that understood.”

“Then perhaps you should stop volunteering explanations before anyone asks for them.”

Chloe stepped away from him.

She had grown increasingly quiet.

The anger that had dominated her earlier behavior was being replaced by something far more uncomfortable.

Fear.

She had trusted Jason.

She had defended him.

She had mocked Lily because she believed the version of reality Jason had constructed.

And now every piece of that reality appeared to be collapsing.
