An amused smile appeared.

“Well,” she said, “this should be interesting.”

Jason tried to stop her.

“Chloe, don't.”

But she was already walking across the showroom.

And the confrontation Jason feared was about to become the most expensive mistake of his life.

Chloe crossed the showroom with the confidence of a woman who had spent her entire adult life being welcomed into places other people could only admire from a distance.

Her heels struck the polished marble in sharp, deliberate steps.

Jason followed several feet behind, already regretting his decision to tell her about Lily.

He had described his former girlfriend as sweet but unsuccessful, intelligent but unambitious, and hopelessly attached to a lifestyle that would never lead anywhere.

He had never expected the two women to meet.

Especially not here.

Chloe stopped directly in front of Lily.

“Well, this is unexpected.”

Lily turned toward her.

“Hello, Chloe.”

The familiarity unsettled Chloe.

“Do we know each other?”

“Not personally.”

“Then how do you know my name?”

Lily glanced toward Jason.

“I've heard quite a bit about you.”

Jason stepped forward.

“Lily, we don't need to do this.”

Lily looked at him calmly.

“Do what?”

“Create unnecessary drama.”

Chloe laughed.

“Oh, I understand now. You must be the ex-girlfriend.”

Lily did not respond.

Chloe looked her up and down.

Jason recognized the expression immediately.

He had seen Chloe use it on restaurant employees, personal assistants, and anyone she considered socially inferior.

“So,” Chloe continued, “what brings you to a dealership like this?”

“I have business here.”

“Business?”

“Yes.”

“What kind of business?”

“Private business.”

Chloe smiled.

“Of course.”

Daniel approached, visibly irritated that Lily had not left.

“Ma'am, I've already explained that this is a private showroom.”

Lily turned toward him.

“And I've explained that I'm waiting for the director.”

Daniel folded his arms.

“The director is unavailable.”

“Have you checked?”

“I know his schedule.”

“Then you should know he has an appointment this afternoon.”

Daniel hesitated.

Jason seized the opportunity.

“Look, Lily, you're making everyone uncomfortable. Chloe and I are here to finalize a purchase.”

Lily looked toward the Vortex.

“Is that the vehicle?”

“Yes.”

“Interesting.”

Chloe frowned.

“What's interesting?”

“Nothing you need to worry about yet.”

The answer irritated her.

“Don't speak to me like that.”

“I answered your question.”

“No, you're trying to embarrass us.”

Lily's expression remained neutral.

“I'm not responsible for how you interpret a simple answer.”

A few nearby customers began paying attention.

Jason noticed them and lowered his voice.

“Lily, please. Whatever you think you're accomplishing, stop.”

She studied him.

“Are you afraid of something?”

“No.”

“Then why do you keep asking me to leave?”

Jason opened his mouth.

No answer came.

Chloe stepped between them.

“Because we don't want you following us around like some desperate woman who can't accept that her boyfriend moved on.”

Lily's eyes narrowed slightly.

“Jason is free to date whomever he chooses.”

“Then act like it.”

“I am.”

Daniel sighed theatrically.

“Ladies, let's keep this professional.”

Lily turned toward him.

“An excellent suggestion.”

He pointed toward a seating area near the entrance.

“You can wait there while I handle my clients.”

“Your clients?”

“Yes.”

“Are you suggesting I'm not one?”

Daniel gave a humorless laugh.

“Ma'am, look around. These vehicles require substantial financial resources.”

“And you know my financial situation?”

“I know enough.”

“How?”

He glanced at her clothing.

The answer was obvious.

Lily waited.

Daniel seemed to realize he had made a mistake, but instead of correcting himself, he became defensive.

“We maintain certain standards here.”

“Standards of customer service?”

“Standards of exclusivity.”

“Those aren't the same thing.”

Chloe rolled her eyes.

“Can someone please escort her outside?”

Daniel turned to Jason.

“Would you like me to call security?”

Jason hesitated.

He was desperate for Lily to disappear.

But something about her composure made him uneasy.

She wasn't behaving like a jealous former girlfriend.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't shouting.

She looked like someone observing a process and carefully remembering every detail.

“Just ask her to leave,” he said.

Daniel nodded.

He reached toward Lily.

“Ma'am, I'm going to need you to come with me.”

“Don't touch me.”

“Then cooperate.”

“I've done nothing that requires removal.”

“You're disrupting a private sales appointment.”

Lily looked at him.

“Then identify the policy I've violated.”

Daniel's face reddened.

He wasn't accustomed to being questioned by someone he considered unimportant.

Most customers either obeyed him or complained loudly enough that he could threaten to summon security.

Lily did neither.

She simply waited.

That made him angrier.

“You know what?” he snapped. “I've had enough of your attitude.”

He grabbed her wrist.

Lily's expression changed.

Not dramatically.

But the warmth disappeared from her eyes.

“Release me.”

Daniel began guiding her toward the exit.

Lily planted her feet.

“I'm warning you.”

Daniel gave her arm a harder pull.

She lost her balance and struck the corner of a display case.

A sharp crack echoed through the showroom.

Several people gasped.

Jason froze.

Even Chloe looked startled.

Lily straightened slowly.

For a moment, the room became silent.

Then a voice rang out from the reception desk.

“Daniel! Let her go!”

The dealership director was hurrying toward them.

His face had gone pale.

Two security officers followed.

Daniel released Lily immediately.

“Sir, she was causing a disturbance.”

The director ignored him.

“Ms. Lily, are you injured?”

Jason frowned.

Ms. Lily?

The director looked horrified by the red mark on her wrist.

“Please accept my apology. This is completely unacceptable.”

Chloe crossed her arms.

“Excuse me. We're customers here. Why is everyone suddenly defending her?”

The director glanced at her.

“Madam, I would appreciate it if you allowed me to address this matter.”

Jason stepped forward.

“Do you know who I am?”

The director looked at him.

“Yes, sir. Your name appears on a pending financing inquiry.”

Jason stiffened.

Chloe turned.

“Financing?”

Jason forced a laugh.

“Standard paperwork. Nothing important.”

Lily watched him closely.

The director continued.

“Ms. Lily, I was told you wished to inspect the Vortex.”

“Yes.”

“Of course. We can arrange that immediately.”

Daniel stared.

“Sir, that vehicle is restricted.”

“I am aware,” the director replied sharply.

“But the manufacturer—”

“I know who controls the authorization.”

Lily glanced toward the display platform.

“Has anyone prepared the ownership terminal?”

The director nodded.

“It's ready.”

Jason laughed nervously.

“What ownership terminal?”

Lily turned toward him.

“Something you should have asked about before trying to buy the car.”

The director approached the digital display and entered a series of credentials.

The enormous wall screen changed.

A blue interface appeared, followed by a verification request.

Lily removed a black card from her handbag.

She placed it against the reader.

A soft electronic tone sounded.

Then the display showed:

OWNER ACCESS — VERIFIED.

Daniel stared at the screen.

The director stepped aside.

Chloe looked from the display to Lily.

“What exactly does that mean?”

Lily approached the midnight-blue Vortex.

She ran her fingertips lightly across the smooth carbon-fiber surface.

Then she turned toward Jason.

“It means,” she said, “that before either of you attempts to purchase this vehicle, we need to discuss who actually owns it.”

Jason's confident expression disappeared.

But Lily wasn't finished.

“And after that,” she continued, “we need to discuss the financial documents you submitted using Chloe's name.”

Chloe slowly turned toward Jason.

“What documents?”

He swallowed.

For the first time all afternoon, he looked genuinely frightened.

The digital wall remained illuminated as the showroom fell into a heavy, uncomfortable silence.

Jason had always believed that confidence could carry him through any situation.

A convincing smile could excuse a missed payment.

A polished explanation could soften an angry creditor.

A carefully chosen title could persuade strangers that he possessed authority he had never earned.

But the words on the screen were not interested in confidence.

OWNER ACCESS — VERIFIED.

The system had accepted Lily's credentials.

And the dealership director was standing beside her with the unmistakable posture of an employee awaiting instructions.

Chloe was the first to break the silence.

“What's going on?”

Nobody answered immediately.

She looked at Jason.

“Why does your ex-girlfriend have access to the ownership system?”

Jason adjusted his cuffs.

“It's probably some administrative arrangement.”

Lily turned toward him.

“Administrative arrangement?”

He forced a smile.

“Maybe you work with the dealership. I don't know.”

“You're correct about one thing,” Lily said. “You don't know.”

The director cleared his throat.

“Perhaps we should move this conversation into a private office.”

“No,” Chloe said sharply. “I want an explanation.”

She looked at Lily.

“Are you employed here?”

“Not in the way you mean.”

“Then why is everyone treating you like you're important?”

Lily considered the question.

She could have answered immediately.

She could have revealed her financial holdings, listed the companies under her control, and watched the expressions around her change.
