Neither executive answered immediately.

Lily smiled faintly.

“That tells me enough.”

She arranged a private visit for the following afternoon.

The director would know only that an ownership representative was scheduled to review the prototype.

The showroom staff would not be told her identity.

Her security team would remain nearby but outside the immediate sales floor.

It was not a stunt designed to embarrass employees.

It was an inspection intended to establish what customers actually experienced.

And if her instincts were correct, the visit might reveal far more than a dishonest salesman.

That evening, Lily received a photograph from her assistant.

Jason and Chloe had been seen attending a private dinner at an upscale restaurant.

Jason was smiling broadly, one arm wrapped around Chloe's waist.

Below the photograph, her assistant had included a publicly posted caption.

Big things coming. Tomorrow changes everything.

Lily stared at the message.

Then she looked at the framed photograph of her father standing beside the unfinished Vortex chassis.

“Tomorrow,” she whispered, “certainly will.”

What she did not know was that Jason had made one more call.

A call to someone inside the dealership who had promised to make the impossible purchase happen.

And that person was now preparing to erase the evidence.

Jason had spent the previous night practicing his smile in the bathroom mirror.

He would never have admitted it.

But the truth was that he had always studied wealthy men the way an actor studied a character.

He watched how they entered restaurants.

How they spoke to waiters.

How they shook hands.

How they treated small amounts of money as though they were entirely meaningless.

He imitated everything.

The expensive suit he planned to wear to the dealership had been purchased on credit.

The watch on his wrist was a luxury model acquired through a payment plan.

Even the apartment he showed Chloe was not technically his.

He was renting it through a corporate housing arrangement that would expire if Vanguard Capital terminated his employment.

But appearances mattered more than the truth.

And Jason had become extraordinarily good at managing appearances.

That morning, Chloe stood before the mirror in his apartment, fastening a diamond necklace around her neck.

“Are you sure about the car?” she asked.

Jason looked up from his phone.

“Of course.”

“It's a lot of money.”

“It's a strategic purchase.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it's true.”

Chloe turned toward him.

“My grandfather always warned me about people who confuse luxury with wealth.”

Jason laughed.

“Your grandfather built a fortune. I'm building one too.”

“He also told me never to risk family assets for something I don't understand.”

Jason crossed the room and placed his hands on her shoulders.

“That's why you have me.”

Chloe smiled uncertainly.

He kissed her forehead.

“I work in finance, baby. I know what I'm doing.”

The words reassured her.

They should not have.

Jason had recently received two warnings from Vanguard Capital's internal compliance division regarding inaccurate professional representations.

He had also been informed that his department was undergoing restructuring.

His actual position was vulnerable.

But Chloe knew none of that.

He had told her that he was being considered for a major promotion.

He had described meetings with executives he barely knew.

He had even suggested that several influential investors wanted him to launch his own private investment company.

Chloe wanted to believe him.

She had spent years surrounded by men who pursued her because of her family's money.

Jason seemed different because he insisted that he already possessed wealth of his own.

What she did not understand was that his supposed independence was part of the manipulation.

At 10:45 that morning, Jason received a message from Daniel.

Everything is arranged. Come at 2 PM. Bring the documents.

Jason smiled.

He typed a response.

You said the vehicle could be reserved today.

Daniel replied almost immediately.

As long as financing is finalized.

Jason's smile faded.

He had hoped Daniel would simply accept the preliminary approval documents.

But the loan application had not yet cleared its final authorization requirements.

One of the missing documents required Chloe's explicit consent.

Jason had considered asking her to sign.

But that would raise too many questions.

Instead, he hoped to persuade Daniel to process the purchase using conditional paperwork, then pressure Chloe to approve the necessary forms afterward.

Once she had announced the purchase publicly, she might feel too embarrassed to reverse course.

It was a reckless plan.

But recklessness had become Jason's primary financial strategy.

He called Daniel.

“What's happening with the lender?”

“We're waiting for verification.”

“You told me it was handled.”

“I told you it was being handled.”

Jason lowered his voice.

“Listen carefully. I have a very important woman coming with me. Her family has major connections. I can't have anyone embarrassing me.”

Daniel chuckled.

“Then make sure you have the signatures.”

“I'll deal with that.”

“Good. And remember our agreement.”

Jason hesitated.

“The commission?”

“Yes.”

“You'll get your percentage.”

Daniel sounded satisfied.

“Then we're good.”

After the call, Jason stood motionless for several seconds.

He had promised Daniel a private payment after the transaction closed.

The payment would come from funds he expected to control once the financing was approved.

He told himself it was merely the cost of doing business.

In reality, he was promising money he did not have to acquire a vehicle he could not afford through collateral he did not own.

It was the financial equivalent of building a mansion on sand.

By noon, Jason and Chloe were traveling through Manhattan in a black luxury sedan.

Chloe was excited.

She photographed the skyline and checked her reflection in the window.

Jason spent most of the journey studying the dealership's website.

The Meridian Vortex was described as a prototype demonstrating the next generation of hypercar engineering.

Its public page emphasized technological achievements.

Nowhere did it offer a purchase price.

Jason interpreted that as exclusivity.

He did not understand that the absence of a price meant the vehicle was not for sale.

When the sedan stopped outside the dealership, a doorman opened Chloe's door.

Inside, enormous glass panels revealed a showroom filled with vehicles whose prices exceeded those of ordinary homes.

Customers walked slowly across polished floors.

Employees wore tailored suits.

A coffee bar offered espresso in delicate porcelain cups.

Everything was designed to make wealthy buyers feel that ordinary rules no longer applied.

Jason loved it.

“Welcome,” Daniel said, appearing almost immediately.

He shook Jason's hand enthusiastically.

“Mr. Jason. A pleasure.”

Jason smiled.

“Daniel. This is Chloe.”

Daniel greeted her with exaggerated warmth.

“We're honored to have you here.”

Chloe looked toward the center of the showroom.

The midnight-blue Vortex stood beneath a circular lighting installation.

Its dramatic bodywork seemed to transform the room around it.

“Oh my God,” she whispered.

Jason smiled triumphantly.

“Beautiful, isn't it?”

“It's incredible.”

Daniel nodded.

“One of the rarest machines ever developed.”

Chloe stepped closer.

“Can we sit inside?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Normally, access is restricted.”

Jason gave him a meaningful look.

Daniel quickly recovered.

“But for exceptional clients, arrangements can sometimes be made.”

Chloe laughed with delight.

Jason felt the familiar rush of satisfaction.

This was what he wanted.

Not merely the vehicle.

The experience of being treated as someone important.

Then he noticed a woman standing near the entrance.

Black turtleneck.

Beige trousers.

Long brown hair.

A familiar posture.

For one terrible second, he thought he was imagining her.

Then she turned.

Lily.

His former girlfriend.

The woman he had dismissed as ordinary.

The woman he had abandoned because she supposedly lacked ambition.

She walked toward the reception desk without looking at him.

Jason's first reaction was surprise.

His second was irritation.

His third was fear.

Because he suddenly remembered the unexplained financial inquiries Lily had discovered shortly before their breakup.

He had convinced himself she knew nothing.

But what if she knew more than he thought?

Chloe followed his gaze.

“Do you know her?”

Jason immediately looked away.

“No one important.”

But Lily had already seen them.

She stopped beside the reception desk and spoke quietly to the receptionist.

Jason couldn't hear the words.

He only saw the receptionist hesitate before reaching for the telephone.

Daniel noticed Lily as well.

His cheerful expression disappeared.

“Excuse me,” he said.

He walked toward her.

Jason watched.

Daniel spoke.

Lily answered.

Daniel's face tightened.

And then he pointed toward the exit.

Jason felt relief.

Perhaps Daniel would remove her before Chloe learned anything about their past.

But the relief vanished when Chloe suddenly asked, “Wait. Isn't that the woman you used to date?”

Jason forced a laugh.

“Ancient history.”

“Why is she here?”

“No idea.”

Chloe studied Lily's simple clothes.

Then she looked at the expensive vehicle beside them.
