Jade Damarell, 32, an experienced skydiver with more than 400 jumps to her name, is believed to have taken her own life after jumping from 10,000 feet near Shotton Colliery, County Durham. The tragedy followed a breakup with her boyfriend, Ben Goodfellow, just a day prior.

She had been in a relationship with Ben Goodfellow, 26, also a keen skydiver, for around six to eight months

Ms. Damarell, originally from Caerphilly, South Wales, died instantly upon impact. Police quickly ruled out suspicious circumstances and discovered notes indicating her intentions.

She had been in a relationship with 26-year-old Goodfellow, also an avid skydiver, for approximately six to eight months. The couple shared a double room in a property rented by parachutists near the local airfield for several months.
A friend described the pair as inseparable, often spending all their time together and frequently skydiving as a team.
“The night before Jade died, Ben ended the relationship,” the friend said. “He went to work the following day, and that was when Jade fell.”

Ben Goodfellow, who works as a technician at Nissan and is the lead singer and guitarist of the Sunderland indie band Post Rome, did not respond to requests for comment. The band canceled a scheduled performance citing “unforeseen circumstances” after the incident.

Initially reported as an accident, SkyHigh Skydiving later confirmed that police believed Ms. Damarell’s death was “a deliberate act.” A friend revealed that authorities found a suicide note referencing the breakup.

An inquest opened this week revealed there was “no evidence of equipment failure.” The friend added that while Jade had ended the relationship with Ben before, this was the first time he had called it off.

Ms. Damarell, a marketing manager for Silver Spoon and a graduate of Leeds University, had completed over 80 jumps in the year leading up to her death. Friends said her parachute did not open as she fell at speeds exceeding 120 mph.

Her parents, Liz and Andrew, paid tribute to their “beloved daughter,” describing her as a “brilliant, beautiful, brave, and truly extraordinary person.” They recalled Jade’s passion for skydiving and her recent pursuit of a pilot’s license.

Emergency services were called to Wreford's Farm, where Jade’s body was recovered. Fellow skydivers, deeply shaken, described her as an integral member of the community and “mad for the sport.”

The coroner’s office listed the cause of death as blunt trauma following a post-mortem examination. The inquest has been adjourned until August 21.

SkyHigh Skydiving issued a statement expressing profound sadness and urged privacy and compassion for those mourning Jade’s loss. They also reminded anyone struggling with mental health to seek support.
