The quiet elegance of the sprawling Sterling Estate was shattered only by the aggressive, rhythmic clinking of designer high heels against the polished floor. Having been married to Daniel for barely two weeks, Chloe had already begun strutting through the grand halls as if she were the undisputed queen of the entire empire.
In the center of the vast marble foyer, Mrs. Eleanor stood quietly near the foot of the grand spiral staircase. Wearing a simple grey house staff uniform, wire-rimmed glasses, and holding a damp cleaning cloth, she was carefully wiping down the ornate bronze railings.
Nobody in the mansion—except for the head butler, who had been sworn to absolute secrecy—knew the truth: the elderly woman scrubbing the marble was actually Mrs. Eleanor Sterling, the billionaire founder and majority shareholder who owned eighty percent of the Sterling Corporation and held the legal deed to every square inch of the estate. Because Daniel had been so blinded by his whirlwind romance, Eleanor had secretly disguised herself as a newly hired housekeeper to observe her new daughter-in-law's true character before officially handing over the family trust.
For fourteen days, Eleanor had quietly endured, gathering every bit of evidence she needed.
Noticing the elderly woman at work, Chloe strutted over, her emerald-green silk cowl-neck gown swishing around her ankles. Her eyes, heavy with dark makeup, narrowed with intense disgust. She sneered, deliberately kicking over a plastic wash bucket sitting near the base of the stairs.
"Hey! Are you blind, old woman?!" Chloe barked, her shrill voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I told you to have the dining room pristine by eight o'clock! Why are you still idling around out here? You're an eyesore!"
Mrs. Eleanor slowly turned around, keeping her posture humble and her tone completely calm. "Miss Chloe, the dining room was cleaned and disinfected by six this morning. I am simply completing the foyer schedule as assigned."
"Did I ask for your attitude?!" Chloe snapped, stepping forward and thrusting a manicured, red-nailed finger inches from Eleanor's face. "Let me remind you of something: I am the mistress of this house now! Trash like you needs to learn your place and do as you're told! Don't tempt me to have Daniel throw you out on the street to join the rest of the homeless!"
Without waiting for a response, Chloe turned toward a heavy steel bucket filled with soapy, filthy water that a groundskeeper had just used to scrub the outdoor terrace. She grabbed the handle with a cruel, malicious smirk.
"You look disgusting," Chloe spat, her eyes bulging with unbridled malice. "Someone needs to wash the filth off you!"
With a violent swing, Chloe threw the bucket of dirty water straight over Eleanor’s head.
SPLASH!
The freezing, dirty water poured over Eleanor’s hair, soaking through her grey uniform and splashing across her wire-rimmed glasses.
Chloe slammed the empty metal bucket onto the marble floor, leaning in until her cruel face was inches from the older woman's dripping cheek.
"I own this house now!" Chloe hissed through clenched teeth. "Learn your place!"
Mrs. Eleanor didn't scream. She didn't cry. She slowly removed her glasses, using a dry corner of her cloth to wipe the dirty water from her eyes. With steady, unhurried hands, she reached into the pocket of her soaked grey shirt, pulled out a small black security walkie-talkie, and pressed the direct line button.
"Daniel... come down to the main foyer, please."
Hearing the elderly woman call her husband directly by his first name over a security radio, Chloe’s arrogant sneer vanished, instantly replaced by a frantic, calculated panic. She immediately dropped to the wet floor, tearing the shoulder of her green silk gown and smearing a drop of dirty water onto her own face to put on an award-winning performance.
Within seconds, heavy, frantic footsteps echoed from the top of the grand staircase. Daniel, dressed in a sharp navy suit, hurried down the steps.
"Daniel! Save me!" Chloe wailed theatrically, tears streaming down her cheeks as she scrambled on her knees toward the stairs, pointing a dramatic, trembling finger at the dripping wet older woman. "This crazy maid just attacked me! She called me a gold-digger, insulted me, and then threw a bucket of dirty water all over me! You have to fire her right now and throw her out!"
Daniel reached the bottom step, his face dark with concern. But as his eyes locked onto the elderly woman standing motionless in the soaked staff uniform, every drop of color drained from his face. The anger on his features instantly transformed into pure, paralyzing horror.
