My mom, then just 22, was (and still is) an extraordinary woman. As her third and final child, born 16 months apart from my siblings, I witnessed her tireless dedication firsthand. While my father worked hard, my mom's efforts never ceased. Her days were a whirlwind of activity: sewing for others, giving perms, ironing for pay, and, of course, caring for three energetic children. Beyond that, she milked our cow, looked after our horse, and even managed timber horses when their stables were rented out in our barn. She was, in every sense, constantly busy!
The Genius of a Nearly Empty Salt Box
So, why am I sharing this story through the lens of a salt box? Because this humble object perfectly symbolizes her ingenious way of entertaining us. My mom was a gifted storyteller and a creator of our childhood joys. She'd often tell us a playful tale: "You could catch a bird if you could just put salt on its tail!" Knowing we couldn't waste precious salt, she'd wait until the blue, round salt box was nearly empty, leaving just a tiny bit inside. Then, she'd hand it over to us.
Immediately, we'd burst out of the house, absolutely convinced we were about to catch a bird! This simple trick bought her a precious bit of quiet and peace as we spent hours chasing birds with that almost-empty salt box. It worked like a charm for a few years when we were small – she definitely needed that space! As we grew older, her methods of entertainment evolved, but her creativity never waned.
A Lifetime of Love and Gratitude
Today, all three of us remain deeply devoted to her and feel incredibly blessed to have her as our mother. She's a true matriarch, celebrating her 93rd birthday on April 23rd. Just last night, as I used the very last grains of salt from a box, a flood of love washed over me for this wonderful woman who gave me life and filled it with such simple, magical moments. Her legacy isn't just in the hard work she did, but in the boundless love and ingenious ways she nurtured us.
