“Not permanently.”

“You used my assets?”

“As support.”

“Without asking me?”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“After approval.”

Chloe stared at him.

Then laughed once.

A sound with no humor in it.

“You were going to surprise me with a car financed against my own money?”

Jason raised both hands.

“No.”

“That's not what happened.”

“What happened?”

Lily finally spoke.

“He submitted a collateral authorization.”

Jason spun toward her.

“Shut up.”

Chloe looked at Lily.

“What authorization?”

Jason stepped between them.

“Lily, I swear—”

“You forged my signature?”

Chloe's voice had changed completely.

Jason froze.

Lily answered carefully.

“The signature did not match the specimen the bank had on file.”

Bradley looked like he wanted to disappear.

Chloe turned toward him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Too fast.

She looked at Lily.

“Did he?”

Lily did not answer for Bradley.

“Ask him.”

Chloe did.

“Did you know there was a problem with my signature?”

Bradley's mouth opened.

Closed.

Jason interrupted.

“This is ridiculous.”

Chloe snapped:

“Be quiet.”

For the first time all afternoon, Jason obeyed.

Bradley said:

“Finance identified an inconsistency.”

“When?”

“This morning.”

“And you still let us walk in here pretending the deal was active?”

“I believed Mr. Vale could resolve it.”

Chloe stared at him.

“With what?”

Bradley had no answer.

Nathan Cole finally emerged from his office.

“What is happening?”

Lily looked at him.

“Good question.”

Nathan recognized her immediately.

His face went white.

That did not go unnoticed.

Bradley saw it.

Jason saw it.

Chloe saw it.

Nathan started:

“Ms. Mercer—”

Lily raised one hand.

“Not yet.”

He stopped.

Jason stared.

“Mercer?”

Lily looked at him.

He knew the surname.

Of course he did.

Not the full structure.

But enough.

He had heard about Mercer Automotive.

He had once asked Lily whether her family had connections to the group.

She had never answered directly.

Jason's confidence shifted.

“Lily…”

“Later.”

She turned to Nathan.

“Did you authorize negotiations on the X-One?”

“No.”

Bradley closed his eyes.

“Did anyone?”

“No.”

“Was the vehicle ever available?”

“No.”

Jason looked at Bradley.

“What?”

Bradley whispered:

“I was trying to create an opportunity.”

Nathan stared at him.

“With a prototype owned by corporate?”

Bradley said nothing.

Lily corrected:

“Not exactly corporate.”

Nathan looked toward her.

The room went quiet.

Chloe asked:

“What does that mean?”

Lily looked at the hypercar.

Then at Nathan.

“Tell them.”

Nathan swallowed.

“The X-One is owned by Mercer Automotive Holdings.”

Jason stared.

Chloe looked between Lily and Nathan.

Then understanding arrived.

“You?”

Lily did not smile.

“My family group.”

Jason's face lost color.

Bradley actually took one step backward.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then Jason laughed.

A weak, defensive sound.

“So this was a test?”

“No.”

Lily replied.

“I came because of complaints about the dealership.”

“You just happened to show up today?”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

“Unfortunate timing.”

Jason looked furious because the truth denied him importance.

He wanted to believe Lily had planned the entire day around him.

She hadn't.

Chloe looked toward the X-One.

“So nobody could buy it?”

“Not currently.”

Lily answered.

“And Jason?”

“Could not afford it anyway.”

His jaw tightened.

“Don't.”

Lily continued because now Chloe deserved complete information.

“Vanguard Capital doesn't compensate his role at the level required for this purchase.”

Jason glared.

Chloe asked:

“How do you know?”

“Because the financing package disclosed income.”

Jason's eyes widened.

“That's private.”

“You submitted it to our dealership.”

Silence.

Lily added:

“And because the application attempted to leverage assets belonging to Chloe without a verified authorization.”

Chloe's hands began shaking.

Jason reached for her.

She slapped his hand away.

“Don't touch me.”

“Baby—”

“No.”

“Listen.”

“No.”

The word cracked through the showroom.

Wealthy customers nearby had stopped pretending not to watch.

Staff froze.

Chloe pulled the ring Jason had given her from her finger.

Not engagement.

A Cartier ring.

She placed it on a display table.

“You told me you were a millionaire.”

Jason whispered:

“I am.”

Lily looked at him.

“No.”

His face turned toward her.

“You have assets.”

She continued.

“You also have liabilities you didn't disclose to Chloe.”

Jason went pale.

“You checked my personal finances?”

“No.”

“You included them in a three-million-dollar loan request.”

That distinction finished him.

Chloe stepped away.

“We are done.”

Jason reached again.

She moved back.

“Don't ever call me.”

Then Chloe turned and walked toward the doors.

Jason followed two steps.

“Chloe!”

She did not stop.

The glass doors closed behind her.

Jason stood alone.

For the first time that afternoon, nobody in the showroom thought he looked wealthy.

Jason did not leave.

That surprised Lily.

Most people flee after public humiliation.

Jason had always been different.

When his image collapsed, his instinct was not retreat.

It was negotiation.

“Lily.”

She ignored him.

Nathan Cole approached.

“Should I call security?”

“No.”

Jason heard.

“Thank you.”

“That wasn't for you.”

He flinched.

Lily turned to Nathan.

“Conference room.”

Then she looked at Bradley.
