Chapter 1

Nobody at Veyron Crest Hypercars paid much attention when Lily walked through the glass doors.

That was exactly what she wanted.

The dealership occupied nearly half a city block in downtown Los Angeles, surrounded by luxury hotels, private banks, and towers where people measured square footage in millions of dollars.

Inside, everything had been designed to make ordinary people feel as though they had entered somewhere they needed permission to breathe.

White marble.

Black steel.

Glass walls.

Champagne.

Soft lighting.

No visible price tags.

The cars sat beneath spotlights like museum pieces.

A silver McLaren.

Two limited-production Ferraris.

A matte-black Koenigsegg.

And at the center of the showroom, behind a velvet barrier, a machine that did not officially exist yet.

The Vesper X-One Prototype.

Three million dollars by internal valuation.

One built.

One planned.

Not for retail.

Not yet.

Most customers assumed enough money could change that.

Most customers were wrong.

Lily stopped ten feet away from it.

Long black coat.

Simple white blouse.

Dark trousers.

No visible jewelry except a thin watch.

Nothing about her appearance shouted billionaire.

That was deliberate.

She had spent her entire adult life watching people behave differently after learning what her last name meant.

So three years earlier, she had stopped giving strangers the answer early.

Sometimes she regretted it.

Other times it told her everything she needed to know.

A salesman approached.

His badge read:

BRADLEY KEENE — SENIOR LUXURY CONSULTANT

Forty.

Perfect teeth.

Perfect hair.

A watch that cost more than most cars.

He glanced at Lily's coat.

Then her shoes.

Then toward the entrance, searching for a driver.

None.

“Can I help you?”

His tone said he hoped the answer was no.

Lily looked toward the prototype.

“I want information about the X-One.”

Bradley's smile changed.

“That vehicle isn't part of the public inventory.”

“I know.”

“Then there isn't much to discuss.”

“Who owns it?”

His expression sharpened.

“Corporate.”

“Which corporation?”

He laughed softly.

“Ma'am, that information isn't relevant to customers.”

Interesting.

Lily had personally signed the asset transfer four months earlier.

The car technically belonged to Mercer Automotive Holdings, one of six companies inside the investment group she controlled.

Nobody on this floor was supposed to know that.

But the general manager did.

Finance did.

Bradley should at least know the proper response.

Instead he had decided she was not worth the effort.

“Can I sit inside?”

“No.”

“Can buyers?”

“It isn't for sale.”

Lily looked at him.

“That wasn't my question.”

Bradley's smile disappeared.

“No.”

At that moment, a man in a blue suit approached the barrier.

Bradley's face immediately brightened.

“Mr. Rosen!”

Lily watched.

Rosen was allowed past the rope.

No paperwork.

No ownership verification.

Bradley opened the driver's door.

“Careful with the leather.”

Lily remained where she stood.

When Rosen finished taking photographs, Bradley returned.

She asked:

“I thought nobody could sit inside.”

Bradley looked irritated.

“Mr. Rosen is one of our qualified clients.”

“And I'm not.”

“I didn't say that.”

“You didn't need to.”

Bradley sighed.

“Look, these cars attract a lot of tourists.”

“I understand.”

“People walk in because they saw videos online.”

“I understand.”

“We have to protect serious clients.”

Lily smiled faintly.

“How do you identify them?”

Bradley paused.

“Experience.”

There it was.

The word she had heard in private banking.

Real estate.

Private aviation.

Luxury retail.

Experience.

A respectable substitute for assumption.

Before Lily could answer, the front doors opened again.

Bradley's attention snapped past her.

His entire posture changed.

Lily turned.

Jason Vale entered wearing a charcoal suit.

Beside him walked a blonde woman in a red designer dress.

Chloe Hart.

Lily had seen photographs.

Never met her.

Jason smiled broadly when Bradley approached.

“Jason!”

“Brad.”

They shook hands like old friends.

Then Jason saw Lily.

His face changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

The past entered the room before either of them spoke.

Chloe noticed.

“You know her?”

Jason recovered quickly.

“Unfortunately.”

Lily said nothing.

Bradley glanced between them.

Jason laughed.

“This is Lily.”

The way he said her name sounded dismissive.

Like a chapter he had already finished reading.

Chloe looked Lily over.

Then smiled.

“Oh.”

Lily knew that smile.

Recognition without respect.

“So you're the ex.”

Jason's jaw tightened slightly.

“Chloe.”

“What?”

She laughed.

“You said she was some startup girl.”

Lily looked at him.

“Startup girl?”

Jason avoided her eyes.

Bradley seemed relieved to discover Lily apparently had a relationship to someone he considered legitimate.

Suddenly his tone softened.

“Ms. Lily, if you're with Mr. Vale—”

“I am not.”

Jason scoffed.

“Still dramatic.”

Lily turned fully toward him.

“What are you doing here?”

“Buying a car.”

He pointed toward the X-One.

“That one.”

Lily almost laughed.

Chloe wrapped one arm around his.

“Jason is celebrating.”

“Senior Vice President.”

Jason smiled.

“Vanguard Capital.”

Lily knew Vanguard.

She also knew Jason's actual compensation.

And she knew something else.

Vanguard had called Mercer Automotive's finance office that morning about an unusual loan request connected to the X-One.
