Cambridge grad daughter of notorious anti-vaxxer died of cancer age 23 after refusing treatment when she 'fell for mum's conspiracy theories', brothers claim
A Cambridge graduate tragically passed away from cancer after being influenced by her mother’s rejection of conventional medical treatments, her siblings have claimed.
Paloma Shemirani, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, died in July of the previous year at the age of 23.
Paloma was the daughter of Kate Shemirani, an infamous anti-vaccine activist who was removed from the UK’s nursing register in 2021 due to her extreme anti-medicine stance, including discouraging the use of masks and vaccines.
Paloma’s brothers, Gabriel and Sebastian, assert that their sister refused chemotherapy despite doctors advising it would offer an 80% chance of survival. They allege this decision was influenced by their mother, with whom Paloma had been attempting to rebuild her relationship.
The brothers also claim that their mother attempted to isolate Paloma from her friends, her boyfriend, and other family members, even as her cancer advanced rapidly.
Paloma, a graduate from Cambridge, had been excited to pursue a career in publishing. She had been photographed proudly holding her A* and A-level results upon finishing school, and her future seemed bright. However, her life was cut short, allegedly due to the harmful influence of her mother, who became widely known during the COVID-19 pandemic for her extreme beliefs.
Kate Shemirani, now 60, continues to call herself a 'natural nurse' despite being banned from practicing nursing. During the pandemic, she gained media attention by claiming that COVID-19 vaccines contained 'a tiny bit of Satan', could cause cancer, and contained cells derived from aborted fetuses. She also espoused theories linking the virus to the rollout of 5G technology and described lockdowns as comparable to the Holocaust, even accusing healthcare workers of 'genocide.'
Kate Shemirani has not responded to the claims made by her sons, instead asserting without evidence that the NHS caused Paloma’s death.
Speaking to the BBC ahead of a Panorama documentary airing on Monday, Gabriel and Sebastian expressed how Paloma’s death came just seven months after her cancer diagnosis. They claim this was a direct consequence of their mother’s influence.
Sebastian stated, “My sister’s passing was a direct result of my mother’s actions and beliefs, and I don't want anyone else to endure the same pain or loss.”
Kate Shemirani has been banned from Twitter, but after the platform rebranded to X, she was reinstated. She now shares her extreme views with her 81,000 followers, including on topics like the NHS, immigration, and vaccines. She regularly peddles conspiracy theories, similar to those promoted by figures like Alex Jones, who has faced legal repercussions for spreading misinformation.
At home, Kate reportedly kept the Wi-Fi off and instilled conspiracy theories in her children, alongside their father Faramarz Shemirani.
Sebastian previously described his childhood as "hell," due to the indoctrination he experienced. He recounted how, at the age of 10, Kate told him that the Rothschild family was planning to live on a space station and that a mass genocide would occur.
In 2012, Kate was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery, including a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. However, she later claimed to have been 'healed' by following the unscientific Gerson therapy, which advocates a plant-based diet and other alternative treatments such as vitamin and mistletoe injections. She has consistently mocked conventional treatments, describing chemotherapy as "poison mustard gas."
Paloma’s close friend, Chantelle, reported witnessing Paloma’s refusal to wear sunscreen because she feared it caused cancer, not sun exposure.
Gabriel and Sebastian distanced themselves from their mother, but Paloma maintained contact, seeking to reconcile. Like her mother, Paloma declined the COVID-19 vaccine.
In 2023, when Paloma was diagnosed with cancer, doctors recommended chemotherapy, stating that it gave her an 80% chance of survival. But Kate intervened, texting Paloma’s boyfriend in all capitals, urging him to prevent Paloma from consenting to the treatment.
Instead of pursuing conventional treatment, Paloma reached out to a former partner of Kate's who advocated for Gerson therapy, a controversial and unsupported method that claims to treat cancer through diet and alternative practices like coffee enemas.
Cancer Research UK states that Gerson therapy is not supported by scientific evidence and has not been proven effective in cancer treatment. The charity notes that some patients turn to Gerson therapy when other treatments have failed, seeking a sense of control over their illness.
Kate’s former partner denies any role in Paloma’s death, but friends observed that Paloma’s cancer continued to worsen. New lumps appeared on her body as she isolated herself from others who disagreed with her treatment choices.
Chantelle believes Paloma's ideological views weren’t strong enough to guide her decisions and that her mother’s influence was immense. Gabriel tried to visit his sister but was told she couldn’t leave due to 'bad air.' He attempted to initiate legal action to have her medically assessed, but this never happened as Paloma passed away in July 2024.
Paloma died from a heart attack caused by her tumor and was taken off life support after several days in the hospital. Gabriel found out about her death days later through his lawyer and had to inform Sebastian.
An inquest into Paloma’s death is set to begin next month.
Kate Shemirani has continued to post about her daughter’s death on social media, maintaining that the NHS caused Paloma’s death. She also claims, without evidence, that her daughter was administered excessive doses of drugs, including adrenaline, which allegedly caused irreversible brain damage.
She has also published material on her website, where she sells vitamin supplements and offers consultations for a hefty fee, despite being banned from practicing nursing. Kate was struck off the nursing register in 2021 by the Nursing and Midwifery Council for her extreme anti-vaccine views.
The UK government has since proposed new legislation to criminalize the act of falsely identifying oneself as a nurse, which would target individuals like Kate, who have used their self-declared 'nursing' title for personal gain.
Kate’s history includes a brief stint as a nurse in the 1980s, followed by work as a British Airways flight attendant and later as a model before venturing into non-medical procedures like Botox and fillers.
She continues to share her conspiracy theories with her online followers, despite widespread condemnation for her unsubstantiated claims about the NHS, vaccines, and 5G technology.
