At just six years old, Ryan Hreljac, born in Canada in May 1991, embarked on a mission that would change the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Africa. It all started when his teacher shared a sobering lesson about the hardships faced by children in Africa, including the devastating reality that some die of thirst due to a lack of clean water. Deeply moved by the contrast between their struggles and his ability to simply turn on a tap for fresh water, Ryan asked how much it would cost to bring water to Africa. His teacher mentioned “WaterCan,” an organization that could build wells for about $70, igniting a spark in Ryan that would grow into a lifelong commitment to helping others.
Determined to make a difference, Ryan rushed home to his mother, Susan, declaring he needed $70 to buy a well for African children. Susan encouraged him to earn the money himself, assigning him chores that paid a few dollars each week. Through hard work and perseverance, Ryan saved up the $70 and visited WaterCan, only to learn that the actual cost of drilling a well was $2,000. Undeterred, even when Susan explained she couldn’t provide the full amount, Ryan promised to raise the entire sum. He expanded his efforts, doing chores around the neighborhood and inspiring his brothers, neighbors, and friends to join in. Together, they raised the $2,000, and in January 1999, a well was drilled in a village in northern Uganda, bringing clean water to those who needed it most.
The impact of Ryan’s efforts grew even further. His school connected with the school near the well, fostering a relationship that led Ryan to meet Akana, a boy who walked miles each day to attend school. Inspired by Akana’s determination, Ryan asked his parents to take him to the village. In 2000, he arrived to a hero’s welcome—hundreds of villagers lined up, forming a corridor and chanting his name. Surprised, Ryan asked the guide, “They even know my name?” The guide replied, “Everyone within 100 kilometers knows.” I can imagine Ryan, a young boy from Canada, standing in awe as the community celebrated his kindness, the sound of his name echoing with gratitude.
Now 33 years old as of April 2025, Ryan has transformed his childhood mission into a lifelong calling. He founded Ryan’s Well Foundation, which has brought over 400 wells to Africa, providing clean water to more than half a million people. Beyond building wells, Ryan’s foundation focuses on education, teaching locals how to maintain the wells and manage water resources sustainably. His work has not only quenched thirst but also empowered communities, giving them the tools to thrive.
Shared by its keeper, Ryan Hreljac’s story is a powerful tribute to the impact one person—even a child—can have on the world. While many of us get caught up in trivial matters, Ryan’s dedication to providing clean water reminds us of the righteousness of helping others. His journey from a six-year-old with a dream to a global advocate for water access inspires us to take action and make a difference, no matter how big the challenge.
This incredible tale encourages us to support initiatives that address global water scarcity and to draw inspiration from young heroes like Ryan. His legacy shows that with determination and a compassionate heart, we can change lives and leave a lasting impact on the world.
