đŹ PART 2: «The Name He Never Forgot»

The manâs face emptied in shock.
For one second, he forgot the train, the passengers, the man by the doorâeverything.
âSarah?â he repeated, but it barely came out.
The little girl nodded, frightened now by his reaction.
He looked at her more closely.
Really looked.
The shape of her eyes. The softness in her face. The same look Sarah used to get when she was trying not to cry.
His hand tightened on the edge of the seat.
Behind them, the man in the black jacket shifted his weight and started walking forward.
Too calm.
Too sure.
The rugged man stood up immediately, placing himself fully between the girl and the aisle.
His voice dropped into something dangerous.
âStay behind me.â
The girl grabbed the back of his jacket with both hands.
The other man stopped a few feet away.
âSheâs with me,â he said sharply.
The girl shook her head at once, terrified.
The seated manâstanding nowâdidnât take his eyes off him.
âNo,â he said. âShe isnât.â
The subway car had gone almost silent. Even the strangers could feel it now. Something was wrong.
The little girlâs breath broke behind him.
âShe said if I found the wolfâŠâ she whispered, âyou would keep me safe.â
That nearly broke him.
Because Sarah knew that tattoo.
Sarah had kissed that hand once.
Sarah had vanished years ago without a word, leaving behind nothing but questions and a wound he never learned how to close.
He turned his head just enough to look at the girl.
âWhere is your mother?â he asked.
The childâs lips trembled.
âShe told me to run if he found us,â she whispered. âShe said youâd help because⊠you loved her before.â
The man in the black jacket lunged one step forward.
The rugged man moved faster, blocking him completely.
The wolf on his hand caught the subway light as he lifted it between them.
Then, without taking his eyes off the man, he asked the girl one more question.
âAre you Sarahâs daughter?â
The girl nodded, tears spilling now.
And suddenly the answer was there, staring him in the face.
The fear.
The timing.
The name.
The eyes.
His eyes.
He looked at her like the ground had dropped away beneath him.
Then back at the man in front of him.
And when he spoke, his voice was calm enough to be terrifying.
âYou should start praying the next stop comes fast.â
