In a touching moment that resonates with animal lovers worldwide, a photograph of fisherman Joar Hesten and Hvaldimir, the so-called “Russian Spy Beluga,” was named a finalist in the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards. Captured by photographer Aleksander Nordahl, the image beautifully showcases the deep bond between Hesten and the beluga whale he rescued in April 2019 off the coast of northern Norway. Hvaldimir, who mysteriously appeared wearing a military camera harness, was freed by Hesten, marking the beginning of an extraordinary relationship that has captivated hearts globally.

When Hvaldimir first surfaced near Hammerfest, Norway, his harness—labeled with equipment from St. Petersburg—sparked speculation that he might be a trained “spy” whale, possibly used for military purposes. Joar Hesten, a local fisherman, took immediate action, carefully removing the harness to free the gentle beluga. Throughout the summer and fall of 2019, Hesten continued to visit Hvaldimir, ensuring the whale’s well-being and collaborating with local fishermen to protect him. I can imagine Hesten leaning over his boat, his hands gently touching Hvaldimir’s smooth, white head, both sharing a moment of trust amidst the chilly Norwegian waters—a scene perfectly captured in Nordahl’s award-nominated photograph.

Hvaldimir, who remains a free-roaming whale, has since become a beloved figure in Norway. As recently as five weeks ago, locals reported spotting him in Sórfold, Norway, looking healthy and active. According to updates, he has been frequenting the area since November, delighting those who keep an eye on his travels. Earlier in the summer of 2023, Hvaldimir ventured to Sweden, but by July 30, he was observed back in Norwegian waters, swimming in the archipelago outside Kragerø. His journeys highlight his curious and sociable nature, traits that have endeared him to communities along the coast.

Shared by its keeper, this story isn’t just about a whale with a mysterious past—it’s a testament to the power of human-animal connections and the compassion that drives individuals like Joar Hesten to protect wildlife. Hvaldimir’s ongoing adventures remind us of the importance of safeguarding marine life and the remarkable relationships that can form when we extend kindness to creatures of the sea. The photograph of Hesten and Hvaldimir serves as a timeless symbol of trust and care, inspiring us all to cherish and protect our planet’s extraordinary inhabitants.
