Don't ignore it: The truth about hidden cameras in hotel mirrors and how to spot them for your safety

Check the mirror in the hotel room to detect if you are being watched.

Haley Michelle Williams, a flight attendant, recently shared her safety tips when staying in hotels, which quickly gained over 13 million views and more than 8,000 comments.

She explained that on a recent trip, she had to stay a few nights in a budget hotel. Typically, she leaves her suitcase near the door when checking into a room, but on that occasion, she immediately locked the door after entering.

Once the door was secured, she checked under the bed, followed by inspecting the mirror to ensure it wasn’t a two-way mirror.

She continued her routine by checking the rest of the room and placed the TV remote on the door handle. She explained that placing the remote on the handle is a precaution: if "someone attempts to twist the door handle" in the middle of the night, the remote will fall and wake her up.

She also shared other safety practices, such as covering peepholes with a towel or closing the curtains. However, she emphasized the importance of checking mirrors for two-way glass.

Two-way mirrors are commonly used in various industries but can pose significant risks if used to secretly observe individuals. Malicious individuals may install such mirrors in places like motels and hotels. Therefore, when traveling, it's essential to understand what a two-way mirror is and how to identify it to ensure your safety.

How to Identify a Two-Way Mirror

Many believe that simply touching the mirror’s surface with your finger is enough to tell if it's a two-way mirror. If there’s a gap between your finger and its reflection, it’s a regular mirror. If the fingers meet with no space between them, it could be a two-way mirror. However, this method alone is not sufficient.

First, check where the mirror is mounted on the wall. Two-way mirrors are typically embedded in the wall, not hanging freely. If the mirror protrudes from the wall, it's likely a regular mirror.

Next, test the light. Turn off the lights in the room and shine a flashlight or use your phone's flashlight to illuminate the mirror. If the light passes through to the other side, it's a two-way mirror. If the light reflects back, you can rest assured it's a normal mirror.
