Chapter 20 — What Clearance Means

Chapter 01 — The Man in the Gray Jacket

Daniel Cross had learned, years ago, that the easiest way to discover what people were really like was to make them believe you were nobody important.

That was why, at 8:17 on a Tuesday morning, he stood quietly in line at Counter 17 of Terminal Four wearing an inexpensive gray jacket, dark trousers, and an old pair of leather shoes that had traveled with him for nearly a decade.

No assistant followed him.

No security officer stood nearby.

No executive badge hung from his chest.

There was nothing about him that suggested he had any authority inside the airport.

To the people waiting around him, Daniel was simply another passenger.

And that was exactly what he wanted.

The departure hall was already crowded. Suitcase wheels clicked against the polished floor. Families argued over passports and boarding times. Business travelers moved impatiently between lines, checking their watches every few seconds. Above them, the electronic departure boards flickered through dozens of destinations.

Chicago.

Atlanta.

Denver.

Seattle.

New York.

Daniel watched all of it without expression.

He had spent most of his adult life studying airports.

Not as a passenger.

As an executive.

Airports were complicated machines made of people, technology, procedures, and money. When everything worked, passengers barely noticed the system. When something failed, they blamed the airline.

Daniel knew better.

Most failures didn't begin with machines.

They began with decisions.
