A brief encounter at a grocery store becomes a powerful moment of kindness, resilience, and recognition for a hardworking young woman with special needs.

Today, I had the privilege of meeting a young woman named Jessica while visiting a Kroger store in New Albany. She was outside, diligently collecting carts in strong winds—doing her job with quiet determination.
As I walked by, I witnessed a moment that broke my heart. A frustrated driver rolled down her window and began yelling at Jessica for momentarily being in her way. The harshness of the words stung. Jessica was visibly shaken, on the verge of tears, not because she had done anything wrong—but because someone chose cruelty over patience.
I walked up to her, gently placed my arm around her, and told her what she needed to hear: She was doing a great job. She had nothing to be ashamed of. Some people are just having a bad day.
We walked into the store together. Jessica was still upset and asked me to stay as she reported the incident to her manager. Even while retelling the story, her voice trembled. I assured the manager that Jessica had handled herself with maturity and grace, and I made sure she knew just how proud she should be.
Before parting, I asked Jessica if I could take a photo. She looked a little confused and asked, “What for?” I told her the truth: I met a beautiful soul today, and I think the world should know about her.
Her smile in that moment? It said everything.
Out of curiosity, I later asked the store manager how many individuals with special needs were employed at this Kroger. He proudly shared that they have at least 12 on staff and that they never turn away anyone who wants to work.
That’s something worth celebrating. A big shoutout to Kroger in New Albany—not just for their hiring practices, but for supporting individuals like Jessica, who show up every day with strength, heart, and integrity.
Moments of kindness can change a life, even if only for a day. And sometimes, all it takes is a smile to remind us what really matters. Credit to Michelle Bulmer for sharing this heartfelt story with the world.
