She looked at him over three years of grief and one summer of war, and found that the arithmetic of her heart, which she had believed settled forever in a churchyard in 1881, had quietly revised itself when she wasn't watching. She did not say so. There was a war to finish, and some things a woman keeps folded until the season for them. But she picked up the basin and the linen and said, in the voice of ordinary life, which is where all the great decisions actually get made: "Then you'll stay for supper. Tomรกs is killing a chicken, and there's no sense a man facing Garrett Sloan on beans alone."

"Yes, ma'am," said Micah Stanton, and followed her in out of the copper light, and neither of them looked back at the Cerros, where a capped well breathed cold in the dark under other men's land, waiting like a held note.

Chapter 19

A Wire to Prescott

The telegraph office in Dry Fork occupied one corner of the freight depot, and its operator, a boy of seventeen named Wally Briggs, owed his job to his uncle's friendship with the freight agent โ€” which is to say, not to Garrett Sloan, a fact Stanton weighed like a coin before he entrusted the boy with the most dangerous sentence in the territory that summer.

The message went to the United States Marshal's office in Prescott, addressed to Marshal J. C. Tolliver, a man Beckett had trained and Stanton had once ridden beside, and it was composed with the care of men who knew every word would be read twice โ€” once by friends and once by anyone Sloan could pay. It did not mention Maren's name. It did not mention water, silver, or a buried box. It said:

HAVE POSSESSION DOCUMENTS AND WITNESS TOUCHING FEDERAL LAND FRAUD AND MURDER OF FEDERAL WITNESS ELLISON 1881. PRINCIPAL NOW STOCKPILING ARMS FOR SEIZURE OF TERRITORY LANDS. REQUEST MARSHALS DRY FORK VICINITY WITHOUT LOCAL NOTICE. MATTER WILL RIPEN WITHIN TWO WEEKS. ANSWER VIA BECKETT. โ€” STANTON, FORMER DEPUTY, MOCCASIN CREEK.

Beckett's name was the credential and the password both; the old man, informed afterward on his porch, snorted like a horse and said Tolliver would come or send men who would, and that was the closest thing to comfort he had offered anyone since 1864.

But Prescott was three days away in the best of weather, and Sloan's machinery did not wait for weather. Judge Webb, acting with a speed his court had never shown for any litigant without money, issued an injunction that Thursday prohibiting "persons unknown" from trespassing in the Cerros โ€” a paper aimed with a lawyer's precision at a widow who had never filed a single trespass in her life โ€” and a second requiring the county to impound the Rocking E's "disputed" cattle pending the bank's suit on her note. Shaw served the papers himself, riding out with them folded in his coat like a man carrying a snake he'd been handed, and apologized with his eyes the whole time he read them aloud in her yard.

"It's paper, Maren," he said, low. "It buys him days, nothing more. Webb knows the note case is rotten โ€” he's stalling me as much as you, marking time until somebody makes this county too hot for procedure. Hold your place. Just hold your place and don't hand them an incident."

"We hold," Maren said. "We've gotten expert at holding."

That night, by lantern light in the kitchen, they did the arithmetic of evidence with the cold thoroughness of generals, because Stanton insisted that what couldn't survive a fire had no business being their only copy of the truth. The original box went back under the oak โ€” no; under the floorboards of the springhouse, in a new-dug cache with the map's oilskin replaced and a stone from the ravine on top of it, for luck or for Thomas. One full set of copies, in Maren's hand and Stanton's, rode to Beckett's cabin in the hem of Tomรกs's Sunday coat. A second set, sealed and witnessed by the Reverend Ainsley's own signature, went into the church safe in Dry Fork, under a cover letter in Maren's writing that began: If this is opened by anyone but me, I am dead, and the man who arranged it owns a bank.

"The original stays where it can be produced in the yard, in daylight, in front of witnesses," Stanton said, "on the one morning Sloan himself provides the audience. That's the heart of it, Maren. Men like him can buy a courtroom, a newspaper, a jury pool, one piece at a time, over months. What he can't buy is a crowd that was standing there. Not afterward. Not once they've seen. So we don't fire our evidence off in telegrams and filings he can smother one by one. We keep it dry โ€” and we let him ride out to finish you in front of the whole valley, and then we show the whole valley the papers, all at once, before he can arrange what they saw."

"And if his fifteen guns decide the argument before the papers are read?" Maren asked.

"Then they decide it over two people shooting back and a sheriff riding in with federal marshals behind him โ€” because Tolliver will come, Maren. Beckett vouched it, and Beckett's vouch is the hardest currency in this territory. All we have to do is be undeniable, and alive, when the law gets here."
