CHAPTER 24: The Iron Seal of Justice

While the storm of adulation still battered the walls of the auditorium, the heavy mahogany double doors at the rear of the first loge swung open with a muffled, authoritative click.

Julian Harrington did not turn around immediately, his senses completely dulled by the deafening thunder of the standing ovation below. It was only when a heavy, gloved hand fell with unyielding weight upon his right shoulder that he flinched, spinning around with a feral snarl.

"Take your hands off me, you insolent fool, or I’ll have you—"

The words died in his throat.

Standing in the doorway of the private box were four men. Two wore dark, weatherproof overcoats over dark suits, their lapels turned back to reveal the gold-and-blue enameled shields of the United States Marshals Service. Flanking them were two armed federal agents in tactical windbreakers bearing the bold yellow letters DOJ.

Behind them stood Christian Brandt, the lead litigator for the Kessler Foundation, holding a thick sheaf of parchment stamped with the red wax seal of the United States District Court for the Southern District.

"Julian Harrington?" the lead Marshal spoke in a flat, gravelly baritone that sliced through the residual acoustic roar of the hall like a razor.

Arthur Sterling scrambled out of his chair, knocking over a crystal champagne bucket that clattered loudly against the carpet. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private box! My client is a respected civic trustee—"

"Quiet, counselor," the Marshal said, not even looking at the lawyer. He drew a folded document from his breast pocket and held it before Julian’s face. "Julian Harrington, I have a federal warrant for your arrest issued by Judge William Holbrooke of the Southern District of New York."

Julian took a step back, his spine slamming against the gilded mahogany railing. His breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. "A warrant? On what grounds? This is an outrage! I will call the governor right now—"

"The charges," Christian Brandt interrupted, stepping forward into the light of the sconces, "include twelve counts of federal bankruptcy fraud, seven counts of commercial extortion, three counts of international money laundering through the Apex Capital syndicate, and the unlawful seizure and unlicensed foreign transfer of military-grade hydraulic damping patents belonging to the late Thomas Vance."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically around the box. He looked at Arthur Sterling. "Arthur! Do something! Tell them this is a civil dispute! Tell them about the indemnity release!"

Arthur looked at the federal agents, then down at his own trembling hands. He stepped backward, flattening himself against the wall, his head bowed. "I... I can't, Julian. Leopold surrendered the encrypted server ledgers two hours ago. The grand jury unsealed the true bill at six o'clock."

"You coward!" Julian lunged toward his lawyer, but two federal marshals seized his arms with practiced, brutal efficiency.

With a metallic clack-clack, a pair of cold, hardened-steel handcuffs snapped around Julian’s manicured wrists behind his back.

"Julian Harrington, you have the right to remain silent," the Marshal recited, wrenching Julian toward the doorway. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As he was dragged through the threshold, Julian twisted his neck, his wild, bloodshot eyes peering down through the box curtains one last time.

On the brightly illuminated stage sixty feet below, Clara Vance was receiving an immense bouquet of white roses from the concertmaster. She was surrounded by the musicians, her smile radiant, pure, and completely untouchable.

Julian opened his mouth to scream—to curse her, to curse the hall, to curse the fate that had brought him to this abyss—but no sound came out. The roaring cheers of three thousand people swallowed his voice entirely, burying his arrogance beneath a mountain of triumphant, immortal music.

The heavy doors of the loge swung shut behind him, sealing him into the cold, silent custody of the law, while on the stage, the girl who had once carried his dirty plates stepped forward to begin her encore.
