Chapter 25: The Loan

Serena kept her voice low, and clear enough that no one could pretend they had misheard it.

"Olivia, I need to tell you what was filed in your name this morning," Serena said. "I wish there were a kinder way, and there is not."

Olivia folded her hands in front of her green dress and gave a single, steady nod. "Then do not soften it," she said. "Read it exactly as it stands."

Serena glanced at the phone in her hand, at Meg's confirmed profile still open. "The lender is Bell Harbor Private Lending," she said. "The broker is Marcus Bell. The filing time was nine forty two this morning. The amount is two point eight million dollars."

A murmur moved through the guests and stopped.

"The collateral listed," Serena continued, "is your trust portfolio. All of it, as security for the loan. And the beneficiary signature line, Olivia, is blank. You never signed anything. You never consented to any of it. The lender has already flagged the filing for compliance review."

Olivia was silent for a breath. The Lumen One turned slowly beside them.

"Thank you," she said. "Now I would like to ask him myself."

She turned to Chase. He was already smiling, the bright, practiced smile he had worn on arrival, though it no longer reached his eyes.

"Liv, come on," he said. "This is not what it looks like."

"Then tell me what it is," Olivia said. "Did you file a loan this morning with Bell Harbor Private Lending?"

"It was preliminary," Chase said. "Paperwork. Everyone does paperwork before a purchase."

"Answer the question I asked," Olivia said. "Did you file it?"

"Yes, but only to hold the car," he said quickly. "A gesture, so no one else could take it before tonight."

"Did you list my trust portfolio as collateral?"

He spread his hands. "It was the only way to show serious intent. Your family name opens doors. I was trying to do something grand for us."

"For us," Olivia repeated. "Did you ask my permission?"

"You would have said yes," he said.

"Did you ask?" she said again, quieter.

"No," he said. "Because I wanted it to be a surprise."

"And the signature line," Olivia said. "Why is it blank, Chase?"

"Because I was going to bring it to you tonight, after the reveal," he said. "With champagne. It would have been a moment, Liv. You sign, we celebrate."

Paula Nguyen stood very still near the turntable. Vincent Karp had not moved from the edge of the floor. No one spoke. The cameras had lowered.

"My brother warned me tonight," Olivia said. "Nathan told me to watch what you did with my name. I told him he was unfair. I owe him an apology."

"Nathan has never liked me," Chase said, his voice sharpening. "And now this?" He turned on Serena, the smile gone. "You planned this. Look at her, Liv. She is a jealous, bitter ex who cannot stand that I moved on, so she is poisoning you against me in front of a crowd. She dressed up half finished paperwork like a crime because humiliating me is all she has left."

"Chase," Serena said, courteous and exact, "I have not raised my voice, and I will not. The filing speaks for itself."

"Do not," Olivia said.

Chase blinked. "Do not what?"

"Do not ask me to choose your story over a document with my own name on it," she said. "I have read men like you at charity boards and closing tables. You reach for a smear when the numbers stop working. The numbers have stopped working."

"Liv, we can talk at home," he said. "Privately. Like adults."

"No," Olivia said. "We are done. Do not call me again. Do not come to my home, and do not use my name with any lender, broker, or seller, ever. If my family hears it attached to yours again, their lawyers will answer, not me."

He stared at her. "You are ending this over paperwork?"

"I am ending this because you tried to spend what was never yours," she said, "and because you performed instead of telling the truth."

Olivia turned to Serena then, her composure precise to the end. "Thank you for telling me here," she said. "In a room full of witnesses, where he cannot rewrite it later. That was a kindness, even if it did not feel like one."

"It was the truth," Serena said gently. "You deserved to hear it standing up."

Olivia walked out with her head high, and the room parted for her, guests and press stepping back to open a path to the glass doors. Chase stood alone in the lights of the turntable, the prototype still turning behind him, and slowly, he turned back to Serena.
