'The medical wing operates on an isolated digital subnet,' Vincent explained, his voice low and technical. 'Camera twelve has a fixed wide-angle lens covering the therapy table, the equipment lockers, and the workbench where Mercer adjusts your orthotics. It records at sixty frames per second directly to an encrypted hard drive array in the basement vault.' Vincent pulled up the timeline for the previous day, setting the search parameters to October 18, between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The high-resolution video stream populated the center monitor, showing the sterile white suite bathed in late afternoon sun.

'Here is your arrival,' Vincent noted. '4:02 p.m. You entered with Mercer. You spent twelve minutes doing passive range-of-motion stretches on the table. At 4:14 p.m., Mercer removed the brace, placed it on the stainless steel workbench near the window, and escorted you back to your residential suite to rest before dinner.' Vincent advanced the playback slider. 'Camera twelve runs continuously. It has never dropped a frame in five years of operation.' Vincent clicked forward to 4:16 p.m. Suddenly, the image froze. A microscopic distortion band rippled across the top of the screen. The digital timecode in the lower right corner read 4:16:12... and then jumped instantaneously to 4:27:18 p.m.

Vincent's hands hovered over the keyboard, his face draining of all color. Exactly eleven minutes and six seconds of surveillance footage had been seamlessly excised from the secure archive. The room in the video appeared identical before and after the cut—the stainless steel workbench was in place, the brace lay on the blue towel—but the physical atmosphere of the timestamp was severed. 'A system error?' Dominic asked, though he already knew the bitter answer. 'No,' Vincent snarled, his fingers flying as he inspected the system log files. 'Camera nine in the corridor and camera ten in the pharmacy remained active. This was a surgical software splice executed at the root level using an administrative cryptographic key. Someone with master clearance sat down at a console, blinded camera twelve for eleven minutes, and scrubbed the index tables so no dropout alert would be dispatched to my phone. And there are only four people in this entire compound who possess that level of clearance.'

Chapter 4: Whispers in Squeaky Shoes

Dominic stood up from his desk. It was an instinctive motion, but this time, the expected agony did not drop him to his knees. The carbon-fiber brace, now correctly aligned, bore his weight with solid, silent stability. He took two steps across the Persian rug toward the monitors. His right leg was weak, the calf muscles atrophied from weeks of disuse, but the joint locked securely, and the searing nerve fire was gone. He looked down at the glowing terminal, his eyes narrowing. 'Who holds the administrative root keys, Vincent?'

'Myself, you, Marcus Kane in cybersecurity, and the two senior shift supervisors on the perimeter watchtower,' Vincent replied without hesitation. 'None of the supervisors would know how to cleanly purge a temporal video sector without leaving an orphaned hash file. Marcus Kane could do it in his sleep, but Kane owes his life to you—you paid for his daughter's bone marrow transplant three years ago. That leaves someone who either coerced a supervisor or obtained an illicit clone of an administrative security token.' Vincent clicked through the keycard access logs for the medical suite's exterior door, cross-referencing the entry attempts during that identical time window.

Before Vincent could decipher the encrypted log, a soft, urgent tap sounded at the heavy double doors of the study. Vincent's hand went instantly to the holster beneath his armpit, the suppressed pistol clearing leather without a sound. Dominic held up a staying palm, gesturing toward the adjoining library where Clare and Ellie were sequestered. 'Who is at the door?' Dominic called out, his tone shifting into the weary, gravelly drone of an exhausted invalid.

'Dominic, it is Dr. Mercer,' came the muffled response through the heavy walnut panels. 'I saw the light beneath your door from the courtyard. I have your evening injection of synthetic analgesic. Given the growing agitation among the council members downstairs, I felt it imperative that we manage your pain levels before tomorrow morning's plenary session.' Dominic and Vincent exchanged a lethal look. Vincent slipped silently behind the velvet window drapes beside the entrance, his weapon raised, the matte black suppressor leveled at chest height.

Dominic walked to the door, deliberately dragging his right foot and leaning heavily against the wall to mimic the agonizing gait he had displayed earlier that evening. He turned the deadbolt with a slow, theatrical click and pulled the door open six inches. Dr. Samuel Mercer stood in the softly lit corridor, wearing his pristine white clinical coat over a tweed vest. In his left hand, he carried his leather physician's bag; in his right, a pre-filled glass syringe capped with a sterile plastic sheath. The doctor's eyes darted past Dominic into the dim study, his expression a practiced facade of clinical sympathy masking a sharp, nervous vigilance.
