Cecilia was born in England in 1900 and aspired to be a scientist. Although women did not receive degrees at the time, she studied natural sciences at Cambridge University.  As a result, she was unable to graduate from there.

Because there were limited opportunities for women scientists in the UK, Cecilia relocated to the United States to further her career in astronomy. Being the first person to receive a doctorate in astronomy from Radcliffe College, she made history at Harvard University.
