When Kate and Josh received a mysterious package from Josh’s estranged father, they were both puzzled. But what followed was even stranger when Josh discovered a ticking box inside the gift—along with a beautiful pillow. A confrontation followed, and Josh was left with a tough decision: should he reconcile with his father, or cut him off for good?

Josh had just taken their daughter, Emily, for a walk in the garden when the doorbell rang, signaling that the day was about to begin.

“I have a package for you,” the delivery man said when Kate opened the door.

She signed for it and brought the box into the kitchen. Their third wedding anniversary was fast approaching, and Josh often surprised her with small gifts.

“I just want to surprise you, Kate,” Josh had said once, lounging on the couch. “It’s the little things that matter.”

So, Kate naturally assumed the package was from him.

But when she sliced through the tape and opened it, she found a beautifully embroidered pillow, with a note sticking out from underneath. It was a lovely piece that would have fit perfectly in their living room.

"Happy Anniversary, Josh and Kate! – Taylor."

For a moment, she basked in the thoughtfulness of the gesture. But then it hit her—there was no way Josh would accept this gift from his father.

“Hey, what’s this?” Josh asked, walking back into the kitchen with Emily on his shoulders. “Did we order something?”

“Well, it’s a gift,” Kate replied cautiously. “From your father.”

Josh grabbed the note, his eyes scanning the words quickly.

Kate could see the tension in his face. Their relationship with Josh’s father, Taylor, was strained and complicated. When Josh was a child, Taylor had abandoned him and his mother to pursue a relationship with another woman.

At seven years old, Josh was left to pick up the pieces of a broken family. He never truly recovered from the experience, and he had shared those painful memories with Kate one evening over dinner.

“A father is supposed to choose you, Kate. But he chose her instead, and left us behind,” Josh had explained. “That’s not how it should have been.”

Kate understood his pain. He had longed for his father’s support, but Taylor’s actions shattered that hope.

Taylor had claimed he left because he was unhappy in his marriage, even justifying his actions by stating that Josh’s mother was too strict. It turned out that Taylor had been involved in illegal activities as well.

“I was just a kid, Kate. I didn’t understand why he couldn’t choose us,” Josh had told her.

Josh never spoke to his father again until a year before they married. Taylor reached out, trying to mend their relationship, but Josh was resolute in his decision not to have his father at their wedding.

“I don’t want him there, Kate,” Josh had said firmly. “It won’t help anyone, and it’ll spoil the day.”

Kate respected his wishes, though part of her wondered if he’d regret it one day. But Josh didn’t seem interested in reconsidering.

When Emily was born, Taylor tried once more to reconnect, this time hoping to be part of his grandchild’s life. But Josh, once again, refused.

“I don’t want him anywhere near us or our child,” Josh had said. “Please, Kate, don’t make me fight you on this.”

And so, life continued without Taylor.

Back to the present moment—Josh picked up the pillow, feeling its texture and pressing it to his ear, his eyes wide with shock.

“Sweetheart, we can’t keep this pillow!” he exclaimed, his voice tense.

Before Kate could react, Josh rushed outside and threw the pillow into the yard.

“Josh, what’s going on?” Kate called out, leaving Emily sitting in her high chair with fruit.

“It’s ticking, Kate!” Josh shouted, panic in his voice. “There’s something inside. He’s up to something.”

Kate’s heart skipped a beat.

“Ticking?” she asked, confused.

They both went outside to check. Josh stood over the pillow, and Kate hesitated before leaning in to listen.

Sure enough, she heard the soft ticking sound.

“I—” Kate began, shocked. She had thought Josh was imagining things.

“Take out your phone and film this,” Josh ordered. “Just in case there’s something illegal in there.”

Taking a deep breath, Josh tore the pillow open. Inside, he found a small, mysterious box with a timer attached to it.

“What the hell is this?” Kate whispered, fear creeping up her spine.

Josh didn’t answer right away. “Let’s find out,” he said, his face hardening. “Call him.”

Kate dialed Taylor’s number, her hands trembling.

“Hi, Kate,” Taylor’s voice came through cheerfully. “Did you get my package? I wasn’t sure what to get you, but I knew I had to send something.”

“There’s something inside the pillow,” Josh said sharply. “A box. It’s ticking. What is it?”

“Please be honest,” Kate demanded.

“It’s a gift, Kate. For your anniversary,” Taylor replied calmly, his voice almost soothing. “The ticking is the timer. It’s supposed to open on the day. There’s something inside.”

Josh grabbed the phone from Kate. “Do you think we want anything from you? What’s really inside, Dad? Is it something illegal?”

“Please, Josh,” Taylor said. “It’s just a gesture. I mean absolutely no harm.”

“If you truly mean that, stay out of our lives,” Josh shot back.

Taylor sighed on the other end. “Wait, Kate. Just open the box, okay?”

Josh immediately ended the call, clearly frustrated. He and Kate stood there, unsure of what to do next. Josh was torn between curiosity and his deeply held resentment towards his father.

“What do you want to do?” Kate asked, offering support.

“I don’t know,” Josh admitted, his voice soft with conflict.

“Let’s open it,” Kate suggested, her calm demeanor helping ease his anxiety. “If he really wanted us to open it, it’s probably harmless, right?”

Josh nodded reluctantly, and Kate began recording again.

With a final deep breath, Josh pried open the box to reveal a check for $100,000.

Josh stood frozen, staring at the check. His emotions were all over the place as he tried to process what this meant.

“What is he playing at, Kate?” Josh asked, his voice full of disbelief. “There’s no way this is clean money. He’s trying to cover something up.”

Before they could think it through, Taylor called back.

Kate hesitated before answering. “We found the check,” she said. “Why did you do that?”

“Because I’m dying, Kate,” Taylor’s voice came through quietly. “I’ve made mistakes, and I know Josh hates me. But that money is for you. If Josh doesn’t want it, keep it for Emily’s future. For school. No one has to know where it came from.”

Kate slowly walked back inside, realizing they had left Emily alone for too long. But their daughter was calmly sitting and eating her fruit.

Josh followed her, his face full of emotion. “Dad,” he said, taking the phone. “If you really care about your health, we need to talk. No more games.”

“I understand,” Taylor said softly. “Let me know when.”

Later that week, they arranged to meet Taylor at a park, not far from their home.

When they arrived, Josh looked uneasy, fidgeting on the park bench.

When Taylor finally arrived, he appeared frail and worn.

“I’m so sorry for everything. I was a terrible father,” Taylor said, his voice full of regret. “I don’t have much time left, but I want to spend it making amends.”

Josh took a deep breath. “It’s not easy, Dad. But I’m willing to try. For Emily’s sake, so one day she’ll know her grandfather helped her through school.”

As Josh and his father spoke, Kate set up a picnic, trying to make the moment feel a little lighter.

After the meeting, Josh squeezed her hand, a sense of relief in his eyes.

“Maybe it was good that pillow showed up, after all,” he said with a small smile.

It seemed like things could only get better from here.
