Last Sunday, I experienced something in church that left me deeply unsettled. A woman, likely in her 40s, walked in adorned with tattoos and multiple piercings. For me, church has always been a sacred space, symbolizing modesty and reverence. Her appearance felt strikingly out of place, almost at odds with the atmosphere of worship. While I understand that everyone expresses themselves differently, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there should be certain standards for how we present ourselves in such a setting.
After the service, I decided to approach her to share my thoughts. I made an effort to be polite and explained that I found her look perhaps a bit too unconventional for church and suggested she consider a more modest approach. Her response caught me off guard—she looked at me as if I were the one out of place and firmly said, “It’s none of your business how I look.”
Her words left me stunned and even more confused. Am I holding onto outdated expectations? Or is it reasonable to hope for a certain level of respect and modesty within the walls of a church?
