June watched her daughter asleep in the guest house bed โ safe, fed, beloved by murderers and gardeners alike โ and did the arithmetic her principles demanded, and found, as she had feared, that the sum would not sit still. She was a law-abiding woman living behind a feared man's walls, eating his bread, letting his name stand between her child and a poured line of petrol. She did not forgive the situation. But on the last evening of that week, Dominic passed the guest house on his night walk and stopped at the sound of Poppy's chess commentary coming through the open window, and June, watching from the porch shadows, saw the most feared man in the state stand in the dark and listen to a six-year-old explain that his rook had retired for reasons of health โ and smile like any grandfather caught at a nursery door.
She went inside and bolted a door that no longer needed bolting, in a house that was changing its shape around all of them, and she did not know yet whether to be glad. She only knew the arithmetic had a new term in it, and the term was not fear.
Chapter 15: Adrian's Choice
Adrian asked for the hour formally, which in that house was itself an event: he sent word through Tomas, at breakfast, that he wished to see his father in the study at four, alone, on business. Dominic read the message twice. In forty years the boy had arrived in his study summoned, or angry, or bleeding from some small catastrophe of youth. He had never once arrived by appointment, carrying the future under his arm in a folder.
He came at four with the folder and a second, thinner one, and he laid them on the desk between them the way a lawyer lays exhibits, and Dominic, who understood ceremony better than any man alive, sat back and gave his son the floor.
"Three years of work," Adrian said. "Some of it you know. Most of it you don't, because I was afraid you'd kill it in the crib if you saw how big it was." He opened the folder. "This is the whole of it, Father. All of it. The plan to take this family legitimate โ not the edges of it. The whole animal."
He laid it out the way he had rehearsed it in the night watches of three years, and his father listened the way the sea listens, without interruption and without mercy: the vineyards first, and the wine label, already nine-tenths clean, needing only honest books and a board with outside names; the trucking company and the construction arm to follow, incorporated properly, contracts bid in the open and lost in the open when they were lost; the family's money audited by a firm in the city whose partners had never heard a whisper they couldn't repeat in court; back taxes computed and paid with the penalties, a sum that made even Adrian's voice slow down. The crews โ the men who had run the old errands, the door-watchers and debt-collectors and silent passengers โ to be offered severance with pensions, retraining where they wanted it, and a door held open and then, at the end of three years, closed. The Serra name, in the end, on wine labels and a school gymnasium and the brass plate of a company that filed its accounts like everybody else. His name beside his father's on clean paper.
"Men will call it surrender," Dominic said, when the silence had had its turn. "Old friends. Men who held this family's coat for forty years while we did what we did."
"Yes."
"And other families will test us while our hands are learning to stay in our pockets. There will be a season โ a year, two โ when we look like a house taking down its own walls, and every jackal in three counties will come to see if the walls are really down."
"Yes," Adrian said. "I've planned for that too. It's in the second folder. We keep the lawyers where the guns used to be, and we let the first test end in a courtroom, on the record, where everybody can watch us win without a shot. It will cost more than the old way. Everything about it costs more than the old way, except the thing that matters."
"And what is that, in your accounting?"
"Boys," Adrian said. "Leo. The sons of the men in the second folder. In the old way we spend them. In this way we spend money." He closed the folder with care. "I hid the size of it from you because I believed you would call it a child's dream and bury it. I am not hiding it now, because someone tried to kill me for the rumor of it three weeks ago, and I decided you should see the thing itself before the men in the dark decide its size for both of us."
Dominic was quiet a long time. The study clock performed its arithmetic. Outside the window the lawn ran down to the guest house, where a lamp was lit, and from somewhere below came the faint, carrying sound of a child explaining chess to a boy who already knew the rules.
"You think Benny's war was about you," Dominic said at last. "It was not. You were the address. The letter was for this." He set his old hand flat on the folder. "Understand what your uncle knows, because he has always known it: the brake line was aimed at this plan. He does not fear it failing, Adrian. He fears it succeeding โ fears a Serra world with no errands for men like him to run. The knife in the garage was an argument against this folder. And now attend to me, because this is the whole of what I have to teach you about power." He leaned forward, and the feared man and the father were, for once, entirely the same person. "If we bury this plan now, out of fear, the men in the dark win twice. Once with the cut line, which failed. Once with the fear, which does not have to fail, because we would be doing their work for them, in this room, at this desk, with our own hands. I did not keep this family alive forty years to hand the deciding vote to a man with a knife in a garage."
Adrian let out a breath he appeared to have been holding since he was twenty-five. "Thenโ"
"Conditions," Dominic said. "It is done wholly or it is not done. No half-clean companies washing dirty money and calling the rinse a conversion โ I have seen that trick from the other side of the table and it rots a house faster than honesty ever starved one. We clean our own house first. There is unfinished business in it, as you know, and it will be finished in the new way, with proof and daylight, or the plan is a costume." He slid the folder toward himself and set it, deliberately, in the center drawer of his desk โ the drawer of things in progress, not the drawer of things buried. "You are not the first Serra to bring me some version of this plan, whatever you believe. You are the first I have said yes to. Do not make me regret the distinction."
