Chapter 13: The Father’s Voice

A hospital conference room over video had its own rhythm, one Daniel Cross would normally have missed in his hurry to reach Boston. Today he noticed the smallest things: people waiting for instructions, people pretending not to be afraid, and the invisible boundaries drawn by uniforms and computer screens. At each boundary somebody had to decide whether another person deserved to be heard.

Lily’s surgeon explains the operation will proceed only after an independent security review of the hospital’s access list. It was the kind of detail people forgot until the day they needed it. The fluorescent lights made every tired face appear a little older.

Daniel consents to a temporary guardian arrangement for Lily under hospital procedures. No one needed to explain why that mattered inside A hospital conference room over video. The challenge was to distinguish the part of the story that could be demonstrated from the part everybody was already beginning to believe. The distinction mattered more than anyone at first understood. One version of events could be filed, stamped, and forwarded until it looked unquestionable; another could survive only if somebody was willing to attach a name and a time to it. The machinery around them was efficient at moving passengers, but not always at hearing them.

“What do we know rather than assume?” Daniel asked. “Enough to protect the record,” Reyes replied. “Not enough to invent the ending.” He asks the surgeon to explain each authorization directly to his daughter. Daniel listened for the missing step in the account. What had been observed directly? What depended on a computer that might have been altered? What would a person who disagreed with them be able to inspect for themselves?

Lily tells him she is tired of adults talking around her. The clock above the door made no sound, but Daniel kept checking it. He had once believed that a brilliant design could compensate for untrustworthy decisions. Now, with real people caught between the design and its operators, he found the belief intolerably naive.

Daniel explains that a criminal group tried to use her identity to frighten him. Nobody raised a voice, which somehow made the exchange more serious. Somewhere nearby a printer produced three pages and then fell silent.

He does not invent guarantees or describe the most disturbing threats. No one needed to explain why that mattered inside A hospital conference room over video. The challenge was to distinguish the part of the story that could be demonstrated from the part everybody was already beginning to believe.

“It would be simpler to let someone else decide,” Mara said. “Simpler for us,” Daniel answered. “Maybe not for the people whose names are in there.” Lily asks whether the person who did this will be punished. Daniel listened for the missing step in the account. What had been observed directly? What depended on a computer that might have been altered? What would a person who disagreed with them be able to inspect for themselves?

He answers that the evidence must be tested, and then the courts will decide. Rain tapped the glass in uneven bursts. He had once believed that a brilliant design could compensate for untrustworthy decisions. Now, with real people caught between the design and its operators, he found the belief intolerably naive.

Mara discovers Celeste’s team scheduled the fake Lily credential to expire at the moment of surgery. Daniel looked toward the nearest exit and realized how much the geography mattered. An announcement echoed above them and dissolved into ordinary airport noise.

The timing was designed to force Daniel to choose between being with Lily and preserving SABLE evidence. No one needed to explain why that mattered inside A hospital conference room over video. The challenge was to distinguish the part of the story that could be demonstrated from the part everybody was already beginning to believe.

“You sound certain,” Reyes observed. “I sound frightened,” Daniel said. “That is why I want another person to check my work.” Leila tells him the prosecution will continue even if he leaves for Boston. Daniel listened for the missing step in the account. What had been observed directly? What depended on a computer that might have been altered? What would a person who disagreed with them be able to inspect for themselves?

For the first time that day Daniel considers allowing others to carry the investigation. The silence after the radio message seemed to have a shape of its own. He had once believed that a brilliant design could compensate for untrustworthy decisions. Now, with real people caught between the design and its operators, he found the belief intolerably naive.

Daniel records his statement and delegates the technical audit to Mara. The screen refreshed, but the human consequences did not disappear with the old display. Rain tapped the glass in uneven bursts.

Reyes arranges ordinary travel rather than a special aircraft or spectacle. No one needed to explain why that mattered inside A hospital conference room over video. The challenge was to distinguish the part of the story that could be demonstrated from the part everybody was already beginning to believe.

“Can you promise this will fix it?” someone asked. Daniel shook his head. “I can promise that we will not hide what we find.” As he approaches the boarding gate, Celeste sends a photo of the old SABLE control room. Daniel listened for the missing step in the account. What had been observed directly? What depended on a computer that might have been altered? What would a person who disagreed with them be able to inspect for themselves?

Someone has reopened the secure console containing Julian’s final unaltered report. A luggage wheel rattled over a seam in the floor, briefly louder than the conversation. He had once believed that a brilliant design could compensate for untrustworthy decisions. Now, with real people caught between the design and its operators, he found the belief intolerably naive.

The final piece of information refused to fit neatly into the account they had constructed. Someone has reopened the secure console containing Julian’s final unaltered report. Daniel understood that whatever happened next would have to be faced without certainty and without the luxury of pretending one person could control it all.
