Son Talks to Mom Only on Video Calls for 7 Years, Returns to Find an Empty House
A mother dedicated her life to providing for her son, ensuring he had everything he needed. Seven years passed, and their only interactions were through a screen. When he finally decided to visit, what he discovered left him speechless.
“Chris, don’t worry about a thing. I’ll cover as much as I can. Whatever you need, just call me,” Olive reassured her son at the train station. He was heading to New York for college, and she had finally secured a well-paying job.
For most of his life, she had struggled to make ends meet. Chris’ gifts were second-hand, and she spent her nights studying while raising him alone. Though he never went without food or shelter, Olive always felt guilty for not providing the luxuries his friends enjoyed.
Now, with a stable income, she was determined to give him everything he needed.
“Thank you, Mom,” Chris said, embracing her before boarding the train.
As the years passed, their only interactions were through video calls. Olive had never met her son’s fiancée, Rosalie, in person. Chris met Rosalie during his junior year, and they were both about to graduate when they discovered she was pregnant. They got engaged, but with their busy schedules, an in-person visit never happened.
Meanwhile, Olive continued working tirelessly. Despite earning a good salary, she took on extra hours to cover Chris’ tuition, living expenses, and eventually, his growing family’s needs.
“Mrs. Franklin, you need to come visit! I’m huge now!” Rosalie joked during a video call, rubbing her baby bump.
“Soon, Rosalie. I can’t wait to meet you,” Olive responded warmly. She longed to visit but never found the time.
Then Chris appeared on the screen. “Mom, can I ask you something?” he began hesitantly. “Since we’re graduating soon and expecting the baby, could you help us with a house? We found one in New Jersey—it reminds me of home.”
Olive hesitated. She had just started saving for retirement.
“Please, Mom. We really need help. Rosalie doesn’t have any family to support her,” Chris pleaded.
After a long pause, Olive sighed. “Alright, Chris. We’ll figure something out.” She knew it meant depleting her savings and tightening her budget, but she couldn’t say no.
“Thank you! I don’t know what I’d do without you!” Chris exclaimed, nearly in tears.
Olive frequently asked them to visit for the holidays, but each year, the answer was the same.
“We can’t, Mom. Maybe next time,” Chris would say, shaking his head.
Seven years passed since he left home. Olive missed her granddaughter’s milestones, but she kept working hard, even giving Chris money to start a business. She never asked for anything in return—only for a visit. But it never came.
Until now.
Chris finally decided to surprise his mother. He couldn’t afford to bring Rosalie and their daughter, Mallory, but he was eager to see Olive in person at last.
However, when his taxi pulled up to her house, he immediately knew something was wrong.
The porch furniture was gone. The once-thriving plants had disappeared. The garden was unkempt, and even the welcome mat was missing. The house was completely dark.
Chris hesitated before knocking on the door. No answer. He peered through the window and froze. The house was empty.
“Chris? Is that you?”
He turned to see Mrs. Torres, the elderly woman who had lived next door his entire life.
“Mrs. Torres! Do you know where my mom is?” he asked urgently.
She frowned. “Oh, honey, your mother moved two years ago. She sold the house. The last owners just left a few weeks ago.”
Chris felt a lump in his throat. “She never told me…”
Mrs. Torres sighed. “She gave me her address. Come inside, I’ll get it for you.”
Chris read the address and frowned. It pointed to a rundown neighborhood on the other side of town.
Arriving at the address, Chris stepped out of the taxi and stared at the dilapidated apartment complex. The paint was peeling, and the street was dimly lit. He hurried inside, making his way up the stairs.

When Olive opened the door, she was shocked.
“Chris? What are you doing here?”
Chris stared at her in disbelief. “Mom, what is this? Why did you sell the house?”
She sighed and invited him in. The apartment was tiny, a stark contrast to the home they once had.
“Chris, when you asked for money for your house, I used all my savings. When you needed money for your business, I had nothing left. I sold the house and gave you almost everything.”
Chris felt like the air had been knocked out of him. “Why didn’t you tell me? Mom, I never would’ve asked if I knew…”
Tears welled up in Olive’s eyes. “I wanted you to succeed. I felt guilty that I couldn’t give you more when you were younger. I just… I wanted to help.”
Chris choked up. “Mom, you already gave me everything I needed. I was so blind. I never asked how you were doing. I never visited. And now… you’re living here, with a roommate, at your age?”
They both started crying, and Chris hugged his mother tightly.
That night, he called Rosalie, explaining everything. They agreed it was time for Olive to move closer to them.
She quickly found a job in New Jersey, and soon after, they built an in-law suite for her, ensuring she would never miss another moment of her granddaughter’s life.

Chris also made a vow to repay every penny his mother had sacrificed for him. His business flourished, and before long, he could support her the way she had always supported him.
But most importantly, he never let his mother sacrifice her happiness for him again.
