Today was a big day for my son, Landon. It was his first flight to Oregon to visit his dad, and as a mom, I was a little nervous about how he would handle the trip. Landon has high-functioning autism, which means he sometimes gets anxious in unfamiliar situations and can be repetitive with questions like, "Are we there yet?"
To make things easier for him, I decided to write a letter and give it to the person sitting next to him on the flight. The note explained Landon’s condition and mentioned that he might need some extra reassurance throughout the flight. I also included $10 and asked the kind stranger to help him feel safe and comfortable during the journey.
The message I received afterward made my heart swell with gratitude:
"Hi Alexa,
My name is Ben, and I sat next to Landon on his flight to Portland. He did ask if we were there yet a few times, but he was a great travel buddy. We had fun playing several rounds of Rock-Paper-Scissors. He’s a great kid, and you’re a lucky mom.
Thank you for the $10, but I didn’t need it. I donated it to the Autism Society in honor of Landon.
