The atmosphere in the luxurious living room was thick with a heavy, stifling silence. The maid, who had been dusting the mantelpiece, froze as she looked toward the grand entrance. Standing there was a young woman, her silhouette framed by the harsh afternoon light. She was unrecognizable—her clothes were tattered and stained with grime, her hair disheveled, and her face weary.

The glass the maid had been holding slipped from her trembling fingers. It hit the marble floor with a sharp, explosive sound, shattering into a thousand crystalline pieces.

"Sir… Madam…" the maid shrieked, her voice cracking with shock. "Miss Sophia is here!"

Within seconds, the quiet mansion erupted into movement. The elderly couple—the heads of the household—rushed into the room, their faces etched with desperation and hope. Simultaneously, a young man appeared at the top of the grand staircase and hurried down, his pace quickening as he caught sight of the figure at the door. As he reached the bottom step, he stopped dead in his tracks, his breath hitching in his throat.

The elderly woman stumbled toward the girl, her hands shaking as she reached out. Tears streamed down her face, carving paths through her makeup.

"Sophia… my dear child…" she sobbed, her voice trembling with raw emotion. "We have been searching for you everywhere. Where have you been? What on earth happened to you?"

Sophia remained deathly still. She did not lean into the embrace; she did not offer a comforting smile. Her expression was a mask of cold, hollow numbness. Slowly, deliberately, her eyes shifted away from the elderly woman and locked onto the young man standing by the stairs.

Her gaze was not one of warmth or relief. It was cold—sharp, jagged, and overflowing with deep-seated pain.

She lifted a trembling, dirt-streaked finger and pointed directly at him. The air in the room grew frigid as she spoke, her voice barely a whisper, yet it cut through the silence like a blade.

"He is the reason," she said, her eyes burning into his. "He is the reason I am in this condition today."
