In an exclusive interview for Mother's Day, Iza Calzado shared heartfelt reflections on the traits she inherited from her late mother, Maria Antonia Ussher. The award-winning actress recalled how her mom's strict nature influenced her, but how she chose a different approach as a mother herself.
“Sobrang strict si Mommy so I went the opposite, so ayokong maging ganu’n,” Iza admitted, acknowledging that while her mother had a very structured and disciplined approach to life, Iza embraced a more relaxed parenting style. “But I think yung nakuha kong traits kay mom…kasi my dad para siyang…free spirit, as an artist,” she explained, noting that while she didn’t adopt everything from her mom, certain qualities, such as a love for books, were passed down to her.

Iza shared how her mother’s passion for books deeply influenced her. “Tsaka yung hilig niya sa books, bata pa lang ako talagang mahilig na ako sa mga libro and that’s because my mom really loves books when she was still alive,” Iza reminisced.
The actress also fondly remembered her mother’s humor and compassion, qualities that she says she inherited. “Then she was also very funny, both of my parents are funny. And actually yung mama ko maawain so, nakuha ko yun,” she said.
As Iza celebrates Mother's Day with her daughter, Deia Amihan, she had a special message for all mothers: “Sa lahat po ng kapwa nanay ko, happy Mother’s Day po sa ating lahat. Please take this day and more days to celebrate, to rest, to empower yourself and to remind yourself of how amazing you are. Because as a mama, you are truly amazing!”
In an emotional moment, Iza shared how difficult it is for her to celebrate her mother's birthday without her. “Mama, your birthday today hits hard. As I cradle my first child in my arms, I can’t help but think what it felt like for you to hold me in yours and wonder what it would look like to see my sweet Deia in your loving arms. So many questions I wish I could ask you, so many things I wish I could tell you. I would be so lucky to see you and hug you tight in my dreams tonight. Thank you, Mama, for giving us the opportunity to live in this wonderful world. Enjoy your birthday in Heaven! I love you so much,” Iza expressed in a heartfelt Instagram post.
