How We Rescued Gu nner: A Lost German Shepherd’s Journey to a Forever Home

A couple rescued a lost German Shepherd named Gunner from a forest trail. Read their heartwarming journey! ❤️🐾

In March 2011, my boyfriend Ryan and I were hiking a trail in a Forest Preserve when an unexpected encounter changed our lives. Out of nowhere, a black German Shepherd appeared, roaming and clearly lost. He approached us, sniffed curiously, and then sat right in front of Ryan, his deep eyes locking onto us. We were stunned—he was absolutely gorgeous, but he had no tags, no collar, nothing to indicate where he belonged. As he trailed behind us, we asked other hikers if he was their dog, but everyone shook their heads. We couldn’t bear the thought of leaving him alone in the forest, unsure if he even had a family waiting for him.

After our walk, we made a decision—we brought the Shepherd to our truck, and he hopped in without hesitation, as if he knew he could trust us. His friendly demeanor melted our hearts; he wouldn’t hurt a fly. But we could tell he’d been out in the wild for a while—his ribs poked through his sleek coat, a sign of hunger. We’d packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch, but instead, we gave them to him along with some water. I can still see him gobbling them down, tail wagging, his eyes sparkling with gratitude as if he’d found a slice of heaven.

Though we wanted nothing more than to take him home right then, we knew we had to do the right thing. We drove him to the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge, IL, the local shelter, to check if he had a microchip. He did, but it was linked to a breeder who was no longer in business, leaving no way to contact an owner. The shelter required a two-week hold to see if anyone would claim him. Those 14 days felt endless, but Ryan and I visited him every single day, our bond with him growing stronger with each visit. We named him G:u:nner, and we couldn’t wait to make him ours.

Finally, on March 16th, we got the call we’d been waiting for—G:u:nner was officially ours to adopt. We raced to the shelter that evening, hearts pounding with excitement, and brought our new family member home. g:u:nner was just 10 months old then, and now, at 3.5 years, he’s grown into the most incredible dog. Loving, caring, kind, and protective, all he wants is to be loved in return. German Shepherds are truly the best, and we feel so lucky to have found and rescued g:u:nner from that forest trail.

Shared by its storyteller, this heartwarming tale isn’t just about a lost dog—it’s about fate, compassion, and the joy of giving a deserving animal a forever home. g:u:nner’s journey reminds us that sometimes, the best family members are the ones you find when you least expect it.
